Dr Yan Liu is a lecturer of in Glycosciences in the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London. Originally trained as a Carbohydrate Chemist, her career has been largely centred on the development and applications of glycan microarrays to elucidate glycan recognition events of biomedical importance. Her most significant achievement to date is the setting up, with Professor Feizi and colleagues in the Glycoscience Laboratory, the Carbohydrate Microarray Facility which has become a unique international collaborative resource for the broad scientific community. She is the PI of the 4-year Wellcome Trust Biomedical Resource Grant entitled 'Carbohydrate Microarray Facility for the New Era of Glycomics' (Nov 2019-Oct 2023), and a key focus of her current research is to develop novel glyco-based diagnostic, therapeutic and management strategies to combat infectious and non-infectious diseases. Collaboration has been at the heart of her research. Over the last 15 years she has coordinated projects on glycan recognition by proteins and pathogens with over 120 researchers in the UK and abroad and has over 71 research publications (Google Scholar: h-index 38). With collaborators in complementary fields (virology, parasitology, protein expression and crystallography), she has applied glycan microarrays in elucidation of the glycan binding specificities of a wide range of adhesive proteins of viruses (polyoma, papilloma, dengue, adenoviruses, rotaviruses and noroviruses), bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, Streptococcus pneumoniae), parasites (Toxoplasma gondii and related apicomplexans, e.g. Eimeria tenella), as well as whole viruses (influenza, papilloma and Chikungunya). My contributions to glycan recognition in pathogen-host interactions are evidenced by 34 research publications in this area. Since April 2018, Dr Liu is a co-investigator in the 5-year Imperial College-March of Dimes European Preterm Birth Research Centre programme. In collaboration with colleagues in the Glycosciences Laboratory, she has established a methodology for microarray analyses of fluorescently labelled whole bacterial cells. This has broaden the scope of her studies in glycan mediated bacteria-host interactions. Dr Liu is actively contributing to the development of the international glycan microarray data repository in the NIH GlyGen project and is working towards the development of a novel curated Glyco-interactome resource for the broad biology community. Dr Liu has been supervising Master research students and currently has three PhD students at Imperial College London (main supervisor for two of the students). She is the oversea co-supervisor for Filipa Trovão, a joint PhD student with Angelina Sá Palma, Ana Luísa Carvalho (UCIBIO-NOVA, Lisbon; Jan 2020-Dec 2023) on a project entitled Translating the human-microbiome molecular cross-talk using glycan microarray and structural biology strategies¿, supported by FCT PhD fellowship. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Link to the full list of publications: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/yan.liu2/publications.html Link to the Carbohydrate Microarray Facility: https://www.imperial.ac.uk/glycosciences/carbohydrate-microarray- facility/
