Omar Vergara Diaz is currently working as Junior Researcher in the Plant Ecophysiology and Metebolism Lab of Dr Rubén Vicente and in the Mass Spectrometry Unit at ITQB NOVA (Portugal). His current research interests are plant eco-physiology and climate change, with particular emphasis on plant organs plasticity and resilience. For this, Omar Vergara is currently responsible for the implementation of a Plant Metabolomics platform (LC-MS/MS) and the development of external phenotyping systems (RGB, spectral and thermal attributes) with cereals as study species. He completed his PhD in 2019 at the University of Barcelona in the Integrative Crop Ecophysiology group, with Prof. JL Araus as supervisor. The main objectives of his doctoral research were (i) to understand plant/crop responses to the environment, particularly under biotic and abiotic stresses, and (ii) to develop high-throughput and low-cost phenotyping tools for the prediction and evaluation of grain yield, plant growth, disease severity, and plant metabolic status. For this, he deployed a wide panoply of sensing and analytical methods such as field spectroscopy, RGB traits, and metabolic, anatomical and isotopic features of the plants. During his PhD, he performed several international research stays in field experimental stations in Zimbabwe, Kenya (CIMMYT) and Perú (INIA), and for the analysis of metabolic profiles in Germany (MPI-MP). He is coauthor in 25 articles in international peer reviewed journal journals (6 as first author), first author in 1 scientific divulgation article and co-author in 1 book chapter. He participated in 20 conferences, 5 as presenting author (oral presentation) and presented 3 posters as first author. He has taught laboratory practices during his doctoral contract and in the last year he has supervised 14 BSc/MSc students internships. From 2012, he has participated in four regional, three national and five European projects. He has a Web of Science H-index of 17 and a GoogleScholar h-index of 20.
