I am Junior Researcher at NOVA Medical School (NMS), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (UNL) in Portugal. My academic journey began with a degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 2010, followed by a Master in Biotechnology in 2012, both from NOVA School of Science and Technology, UNL. In 2019, I finished my PhD in Mechanisms of Disease and Regenerative Medicine (UNL/UAlgarve) with the project that aimed to study the modulation of carotid body (CB) activity as a therapeutic intervention in metabolic diseases. During my PhD, I had the opportunity to participate in a research project in collaboration with GSK and Galvani Bioelectronics dedicated to the pioneer studies of CB neuromodulation to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D). In fact, this work was distinguished with the Pulido Valente Ciência 2018 Award (Pulido Valente Foundation|FCT), for the best publication in the biomedical sciences in Portugal and my PhD work was also recognized by the International Society for Arterial Chemoreception with the Fernando de Castro ISAC Trainee Award (2017). After finished my PhD I spent 9 months as a Postdoc under the supervision of Philippe Blancou at the l'Institut de Pharmacologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire, CNRS, France. Trying to pursue a career in science, immediately after defending my PhD, I successfully applied to a Junior Research contract from Stimulus of Scientific Employment Individual by FCT (CEECIND/02428/2018). In the journey to my scientific independence in 2021, I was granted (principal investigator) by FCT with an exploratory project (EXPL/MED-NEU/0733/2021) dedicated to the develop of a closed-loop approach for the real time neuromodulation of the carotid sinus nerve to treat T2D. In 2023, I received the L'Oréal Portugal Medals of Honor for Women in Science with a project that aimed to study the neuromodulation of the carotid sinus nerve activity to T2D. This award recognized the therapeutic potential of the carotid sinus nerve neuromodulation to T2D. Since I start my scientific journey, 13 years ago, I published 36 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to my scientific career, between 2018 and 2020 I had teaching duties as Invited Assistant of Pharmacology and since 2021 I am an Assistant Professor in the degree of Nutritional Sciences and Master courses at NMS|UNL.
