Quirina Ferreira (QF) is a leading researcher in the field of nanotechnology, namely in the development of nano(bio)materials for organic electronics and nanomedicine. Her interests also include the development of nanodevices for organic electronics which line of investigation she started while at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, where she held a position from 2008 to 2023. Before that, QF completed her PhD in Physics Engineering in 2008 from NOVA School of Science and Technology, after obtaining her degree in Chemical Engineering in 2004, from the same institution. Her work has led to the creation of novel nanoscale structures using bottom-up approaches and molecular manipulation throughout high-resolution scanning probe microscopy techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy. QF has published 40 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 10 papers in conference proceedings, 2 book chapters and 80 communications in conferences, of which 41 were oral contributions, resulting in a Scopus h-index of 14. She coordinated 4 funded projects, one of them is ongoing and a multicentric project with national and international partners, recently funded by FCT which aims to the development of a new device for glaucoma treatment ¿ SmartGlauco (PTDC/CTM-REF/2679/2020). She was a team member in 10 funded projects with national/international funding. She has more than 40 oral presentations and she took part in the organizing committee of 3 international scientific events. She supervised 4 master thesis in Biomedical Engineering, 10 master researchers, 3 postdoctoral researchers and 3 PhD Theses in Biomedicine (ongoing). QF has been involved in important international collaborations including industry partners, namely, she is working with CSI Instruments to develop new solutions for Scanning Probe Microscopies; with Catalonia Bioengineering Institute to develop self-assembled monolayers to deliver biocompatible drugs; and with the Ophthalmology Laboratory at KU Leuven to develop nanomaterials to treat glaucoma. QF is committed to promoting science education. She is invited associate professor at the Escola Superior de Gestão e Tecnologia de Santarém, of the Instituto Politécnico de Santarém where she coordinates the courses: Research Methodologies and Research Project. These courses were designed by QF and their classes are based on the Active Learning using Challenge-based Learning and Design Thinking methodologies. She also collaborates as associate professor at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde of the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa in the course of Materials Science and Systemic Pathology. QF promotes several educational workshops about nanotechnology for children based on Montessori education. She is a Montessori Assistant by the Association Montessori Internationale since 2021.
