I am a trained Biologist specialized in ancient DNA applications to archaeological, paleontological and conservation biology questions and have for the past 20 years been using molecular biology techniques to study conservation genetics, phylogeography and population dynamics of several endangered species. I graduated in Biology (2000) and completed an MSc in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (2006) from the University of Porto, gained a Marie Curie early training grant within the GeneTime network and completed a PhD in Biology - Ancient DNA and Evolution, from the University of Copenhagen in 2009; where I continued as a Post-doc Researcher from 2009-2011. In the past ten years (2011-2021) I worked as a Curator at the Science Museum, University of Coimbra (2012); Assistant Professor at the Natural History Museum, University of Copenhagen (2013-16; including a career break of 12 months due to maternity leave in 2016); and as Post-doc at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen (2017, followed by a 12 month career brake due to maternity leave). In 2019 I started a position as researcher at CIIMAR; University of Porto, funded through the highly competitive, FCT, I.P., Scientific Employment Stimulus Initiative, reference CEECIND/01799/2017. During this time, I supervised Master students, two PhD students and a Post-doc Fellow. I was PI on a research project funded by FCT (PTDC/BIA-BIC/4177/2012) that lasted until the end of 2015 to compare genetic diversity and microbial load of modern and historical honeybees. I was also awarded a prestigious FCT Investigator Grant in 2012 that I had to decline to accept a position at University of Copenhagen. I have published 2 theses, 5 book chapters, 55 papers in international peer review journals, and a technical report for IUCN with over 9800 citations and an h-index of 35. Of these 16 were published in major multidisciplinary scientific journals including PNAS (6), Science (6) and Nature (4), not least first author publications in Science, PNAS, Molecular Ecology and last author in Quaternary Science Reviews, MPE, Zoological J. Linnean Society and JAS Reports. Most of these were hailed as ground-breaking due to their synthesis of genetic techniques with advanced computer simulation in order to maximise the information that could be gained from the data. Several of my publications have gathered international media attention. I have published six papers as last and corresponding author, consolidating my path as an independent researcher. These focus on the application of stable isotopes to trace the palaeodiet and climate of ancient musk ox populations; the phylogenetic placement and conservation genomics of an endangered and an extinct African antelope; the molecular identification of whale remains; the loss of genetic diversity of honey bees and the population dynamics of Mediterranean monk seals in the last centuries. I have also participated in several genome consortia, namely the B10K, that culminated in high profile publications, extensively covered by the media worldwide, that really broadened my scientific network and enabled new collaborations. I am a reviewer for several journals, including, Nature Communications, Plos One, Scientific Reports, Journal of Biogeography, Molecular Phyogenetics and Evolution, Quaternary Science Reviews. I have also been teaching a course on Ancient DNA and Evolution at University of Copenhagen, 2007-2010 and 2013-2016. I have good leadership and management skills developed by supervising multiple students, interacting with a large network of international collaborators and being part of the organization of several conferences (ISBA4 2009, ENBE 2012) and workshops (ISBA3, 2007).

2011/09 - 2012/09 I was involved in the activities developed by the Science Museum, University of Coimbra for the Europeans Researchers' Night. The European Researchers' Night, funded under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (MSCA), is a Europe-wide public event that brings researchers closer to the public. The Night provides researchers the opportunity to showcase the diversity of science and its impact on citizens’ daily lives, and to stimulate interest in research careers – especially among young people.
