Marta Pingarilho is Portuguese and was born in Évora. After finishing her Ph.D. in 2013 in the Genetics Department of NOVA Medical School, where her research was focused on Genetic Toxicology, cancer and epidemiology, she joined the Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of New University of Lisbon (IHMT-NOVA) under the scope of HIV drug resistance, particularly on the identification of transmitted and acquired drug resistance mutations. Since then, she has gained a lot of expertise and skills in various domains, involving conceptualization and project implementation, including all the ethical related issues, management and laboratory-associated tasks, as well as the organization and analysis of large databases of integrated genomic, clinical, demographic, and socio-behavioral data and HIV-1 drug resistance. Between 2018 and 2024 she was a Doctoral Researcher at the Global Public Health Unit of IHMT-NOVA and since 2024 she has been assistant professor of IHMT-NOVA. Since her Ph.D., she has been the principal or co-investigator in 4 national funding projects, and she has participated in 11 others with national and European funding, related to global public health and epidemiology, several of them related to the health of migrants and people living in African Low- and Middle-income countries. She published 33 articles in indexed international journals and contributed to 3 book chapters. She has also participated in more than 60 national and international congresses with oral and poster presentations. Her expertise is focused on Molecular Epidemiology, Transmission of HIV and other infectious diseases, Drug resistance and Global Public Health.
