Filipe Carvalho has a BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of Porto (Porto, Portugal). He then joined the lab of Didier Cabanes, at the IBMC, later i3S (Porto, Portugal), to begin his research on the virulence mechanisms and determinants of the human bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes, as an undergraduate and then as a doctoral student. In 2016, he obtained his PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences (University Porto, Portugal), with a thesis on the role of wall teichoic acid glycosylations in the virulence and host immune evasion properties of L. monocytogenes. Between 2016 and 2019, he did a postdoc at the Institut Pasteur (Paris, France), in the lab of Pascale Cossart, studying the impact of L. monocytogenes infection in mitochondrial function and dynamics. He is currently a postdoc at the INRAE (Jouy-en-Josas, France), in the lab of Hélène Bierne, studying the viable-but-non-culturable (VBNC) state of L. monocytogenes. Filipe Carvalho has produced and co-authored several publications in high-impact-factor, international peer-reviewed journals (e.g. PLoS Pathogens, mBio, Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, P.N.A.S., Nucleic Acids Research, Environmental Microbiology) and was a reviewer for multiple manuscripts submitted for publication (e.g. Cell Host & Microbe, Toxins, Pathogens). Having established his position as a researcher in the Listeria field, Filipe Carvalho's research interests include further exploring the role of yet-unknown and uncharacterised bacterial factors and processes in the physiology and virulence of Gram-positive bacterial pathogens, using L. monocytogenes as a model organism.

2008/05 - 2008/05 This course follows the recommendations of FELASA for laboratory animal science training for scientists (Category C, now Functions A, B and D). The course combines theory (lectures, self-study) with practical exercises and group assignments. Focus is on how to design, plan and carry out experiments to minimize animal harm. We organize this 80-h course either over 2 subsequent weeks or as modules of 3-5 days over one month. This course will give you the necessary training to obtain a permit to work with animals in most European countries.
