Degree in Biological Sciences (1989) in the University of Santiago de Compostela. PhD in Biological Sciences (1994) in the same University (extraordinary award). He has carried out pre- (1993) and post-doctoral (1994, 1997) stays in the University of Ottawa (Canada). In 1995 he obtained a position in the University of Vigo. Since 2009 he is Full Professor (catedrático) of Physiology in the Faculty of Biology of the University of Vigo where he teaches to undergraduate (Biology; Marine Sciences) master (Aquaculture; Marine Biology) and PhD (Aquaculture; Marine Science and Technology) students and coordinates the master and PhD Programs in Aquaculture. In 1998 founded, together with Jesús Míguez the research group on Fish Physiology and its application to Aquaculture that has produced approx. 150 papers in highly-ranked peer-reviewed journals. Within the main research lines of the group he has participated and supervised different studies in fish dealing with food intake, energy metabolism, nutrition, osmoregulation, neuroendocrinology, circadian rhythms, and stress response, all of them related to their impact on aquaculture. In the last 15 years, his research focused on characterization in fish of nutrient sensing systems and their role in the control of food intake and energy homeostasis as well as their interaction with stress. He is a pioneer in this field in fish, and, as a result, he is recognized as an international reference. To carry out his research activities he has participated in 41 research projects: 3 of the European Union, 11 of the Spanish National Plan of R+D+i (Principal investigator in 7), 16 of the Galician Government (Principal investigator in 11), and 12 from other Institutions (Principal investigator in 10). He has participated in 5 contracts with companies in the last 5 years. He has published 180 SCI peer-reviewed papers. 101 of the papers belong to the first quartile (Q1). He is last/first/corresponding author in 110 of the papers. He has been cited >5000 times with and average of >500 per year in the last 5 years, and his h index=41. He is publishing in the last five years an average of 10 SCI papers/year. He has supervised 10 PhD Thesis (4 ongoing) and 7 postdoctoral (2 ongoing) contracts and presented 166 communications in International and national congress. He is academic editor of 5 SCI journals (PloS One, British Journal of Nutrition, Frontiers in Physiology, and Scientific Reports, and Frontiers in Marine Science) and member of the editorial board of American Journal of Physiology (Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. Finally, he has evaluated research projects for national (ANEP and Subdirección General de Proyectos de Investigación), and international (Canada-NSERC; France-ANR, France-ANSES, The Netherlands-NWO, Belgium-FWO, Austria-FWF, Argentina, and Chile-FONDECYT) research agencies, and has reviewed >400 papers in 66 different SCI journals
