José Prates (1965-) holds the position of Full Professor (since 2010) and Head of Department at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV), University of Lisbon (Portugal). He leads the Quality of Animal Products Laboratory at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA), the research centre of FMV (since 2000). In addition, José Prates is a member of the Associated Laboratory for Animal and Veterinary Science (AL4AnimalS), a collaborative laboratory that unites the three Portuguese R&D centres specialising in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. He also is a Manager and Strategic Board Member of NZYTech, a biotechnology and food analysis company he co-founded in 2008, employing 60 researchers and other professionals. José Prates holds a Graduation in Pharmaceutical Sciences (University of Lisbon, 1990, 17/20), a Master’s in Biochemistry (1993), and a PhD in Animal Science and Technology (2000). In 2007, he attained "Agregação", the highest academic qualification in Portugal, demonstrating expertise and leadership in Animal and Food Science. With over 34 years of academic and research experience, he has built an extensive scientific portfolio, including 266 peer-reviewed papers (mostly in Q1 journals, 60% as last author, 40% from international collaborations), 25 books/book chapters, and 4 patents. His work has received over 6,900 citations (h-index 45, Scopus). Recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in Animal and Dairy Science (2023-2024, https://topresearcherslist.com), he has successfully led or contributed to over 40 national and international projects, securing more than €10 million in competitive funding. His commitment to postgraduate education is reflected in his mentorship of 25 postdoctoral researchers and supervision of 25 PhD theses. His international collaborations include serving on the Management Committee of COST Actions FA1401 (PiGutNet) and CA15215 (IPEMA), where he has strengthened scientific networks across 20+ countries. His strong industry partnerships, particularly at NZYTech, have allowed him to translate academic research into commercial solutions, bridging the gap between scientific discovery and real-world applications. His current research focuses on advancing sustainable livestock and food valorization, with a particular emphasis on novel feeding strategies incorporating microalgae and seaweeds in monogastric diets. His work aims to enhance feed efficiency, enhance meat quality, and promote public health. Aligned with One Health principles, his research contributes to environmental sustainability, animal welfare, and human health, reinforcing the European Union's leadership in sustainable animal nutrition and food innovation.
