Marco Pires Sampaio Martins Rodrigues has a Degree in Physics and Chemistry since 2003, in 2007 he became specialized in Medical Physics and in 2008, he joined the U.Minho Medical School and progressed up to the 3rd year. However, in 2014 he decided to join a Master in Applied Physics that he concluded in 2016. In 2021 he graduated from the MAP-Fis Joint Doctoral Programme in Physics, from the Universities of Minho, Porto and Aveiro, and in 2022 he was awarded with the Best 2021 PhD Thesis from the School of Sciences of the University of Minho. Regarding his professional career, from 2002 to 2014 he was a Physics and Chemistry Teacher, and since 2014 he has been a researcher in the Centre of Physics from the University of Minho and Porto, Portugal. This research led to 42 accepted papers in international peer-reviewed journals, one book cover and to the participation in several national and international conferences, where he won the third place in a poster competition (Materiais 2017, Aveiro) and was a finalist of the Graduate Student Award (EMRS Spring Meeting 2019, Nice). His main research topic is related to thin films produced by Reactive Magnetron Sputtering with glancing angle deposition (GLAD) for sensing applications. He is also a proficient user in scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), a specialist in data/(bio)signal/image processing and a skilled experimentalist. During his research activity, he participated in 1 European project, 7 national projects and 2 bilateral projects, he was a member of the Local Organizing Committee of the 78th IUVSTA Workshop, and he is now a member of the Organizing Committee of the 95th IUVSTA Workshop. He likes to define himself as a curious and persistent person. Thin film-based resistive heating system for in-situ monitoring of the optical transmittance during thermal treatments of films containing nanoparticles. This heating system was developed to be coupled to the vacuum chamber with controlled atmosphere and includes a thermocouple for temperature monitoring and an acquisition software made in LabView.. 2019.

Spectroscopy systems for measuring the electrochemical impedance and electrode-skin impedance of conductive thin films deposited on several conductive and non-conductive substrates (electrodes), consisting of an electronic system and acquisition/protection software developed in LabVIEW. 2017.
  7. Nanoparticle analysis algorithm. Nanoparticles distribution analysis in plasmonic thin films from SEM and TEM images. This MATLAB algorithm allows a systematic analysis of hundreds of nanoparticles (size, aspect ratio, nearest neighbour and statistical treatment), using advanced image processing. 2017.

2020/07 - Atual 95th IUVSTA Workshop-Plasmonic Thin Films: Theory, Synthesis and Application- will be focused on the latest advances and most exciting results in the area of Plasmonic Thin Films (including nanoparticles, nanostructures, nanocomposites and 2D materials) i.e. materials that manifest collective oscillations of free electrons, used to: enhance several light-matter interaction processes; to accurately detect different kinds of molecules and biomolecules using label-free sensing platforms; or even to perform biological imaging and photothermal therapies. 2015/10/05 - 2015/10/09 The 78th IUVSTA workshop on “New horizons in oxynitride thinfilms: from synthesis to applications”, was focused on the design, synthesis, properties, including the defect structure and applications, of several different types of oxynitride protective and functional thin films and coatings. Multifunctional stable and metastable oxynitride coatings are an important filed within thin films and coatings since they are expected to fill a gap between common properties of nitride and oxide based coatings.
