I have completed my Ph.D. Molecular Biology in 2003 by University of Lisbon. I graduated in Biochemistry, degree obtained in 1996 (5 year- graduation course), by the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University. Presently, I am a Research Scientist at the University College Dublin (UCD)- Charles Institute of Dermatology. Until 2020, I was a Doctorate Investigator at CEDOC- NOVA Medical School, after two post-doctoral fellowships. The first post-graduation was developed in the field of Oncobiology and Angiogenesis and the second on Membrane Traffic and Cytoskeleton Dynamics. I have Published in peer-reviewed international scientific journals 19 papers, 715. I have 10 publications as first author and 2 publication as co-corresponding author. I organized 2 scientific events and I am supervisor of 2 PhD students (completed) lectured classes as adjunct professor for Nutrition graduation course and Medical student at NOVA Medical School (2018-2021). I am a reviewer of scientific publications on several peer-review journals (i.e., British Journal of Dermatology; Experimental Dermatology; Cells; Cancers; IJMS). Moreover, I have tutoring young MD students from the research exchange programme organized by the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA), at NOVA Medical School. The aim of my research is to understand the mechanisms of diseases caused by deficient membrane trafficking and cellular migration as a basis for new and targeted prognostic and therapeutic approaches. I focus on the study of vesicular trafficking and the remodelling of the actin cytoskeleton to control migratory cellular mechanisms that are essential for normal development of multicellular organisms and whose impairment or malfunction can lead to human disease, namely breast cancer development and progression. I had the opportunity during my first post-doctoral fellowship to acquire expertise in molecular mechanisms of cancer, focusing my research on tumour angiogenesis and metabolism. Then, during my second post-doctoral fellowship I have been studying small GTPases of the Ras superfamily, as these are master regulators of vesicular trafficking. Presently, I am focused in the formation and progression of skin cancers (particularly in melanoma), as these constitute the most common cancers in humans, with more cases diagnosed than for all other cancers combined. Greater knowledge of how to target unstable skin cells that can progress to malignancy may provide new avenues for skin cancer prevention and treatment.
