Ana Costa Xavier de Carvalho is a group leader at the i3S in Porto and her research team is interested in studying the actomyosin dynamics that lead to network contractility in vivo. Ana completed her Licenciatura in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto in 1998. She was a recipient of a fellowship from the Doctoral Program G.A.B.B.A., and her doctoral studies were primarily conducted in the laboratory of Prof. William Earnshaw at the Welcome Trust Center for Cell Biology in Edinburgh, UK, where she studied the process of mitosis. Her postdoctoral work was done in the laboratory of Prof. Karen Oegema at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego, USA, where she started studying the mechanisms of cytokinesis using the nematode C. elegans as model system. In 2012, Ana started her career as an independent scientist at the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology, IBMC in Porto, Portugal. Through 3 consecutive competitive calls, Ana was awarded a contract as investigator through the Welcome II Programme in 2012 (co-funded by the Marie Curie Action Cofund and FCT, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), an investigator 5-year contract in 2014 awarded by FCT, and a 6-year contract as Principal Investigator under the FCT CEEC program (Competition for Individual Scientific Employment) that started in 2019. The work in Ana's group has been funded by an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council and by FCT. In her group at IBMC (which in the meantime became part of a large consortium, the i3S) her team uses live cell microscopy, genome engineering, genetics and biochemistry to perform structure-function studies using C. elegans as model organism. Their research has been mainly focused on investigating the molecular mechanisms through which an actomyosin contractile ring pinches a mother cell into two daughter cells during cytokinesis. More recently, the team started applying their knowledge and expertise to study other actomyosin networks in vivo in the context of multicellular tissues, like the C. elegans spermatheca, vulva and skeletal muscle.
