Amaranta Kahn is junior researcher (FCT-CEEC) in Universidade do Porto Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental, at the Cyanobacteria Natural Product Laboratory (Dr. Pedro Leão). She was PI of 1 SEED CIIMAR Project, Co-PI of 1 COB CIIMAR project, participated in 1 FCT project, 2 FCT exploratory project and 1 ERC starting grant project. She studies cyanobacteria fatty acid metabolism, in the general field of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, lipidomic, metabolomic, genetic engineering and chemical ecology. She completed her PhD in molecular biology and biochemistry with an emphasize on biofuel on the 12/2019 at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. She worked on designer cellulosome improvement and thermostability in the laboratory of Prof. Bayer. During her PhD she collaborated and visited for 4 months the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Colorado, USA, in the laboratory of Dr. Bomble. In total she was awarded a 5KE SEED grant (CIIMAR, 2023), a 9K$ fellowship to participate to the Microbial Diversity Summer Course (University of Chicago, 2023), a Ciencia Verao fellowship to hire a summer student (FCT, 2022), 3 competitive fellowships from France and Israel ministry, as well as Renewable Energy center of WIS to finance her 5 years of PhD. She holds a Master Degree (01/08/2014) in molecular, cellular biology and biochemistry from Sorbonne Université and the Pasteur Institute, France. She completed her 1st year of Master in Genetic and Genomic (08/2013) at École Normale Supérieure Paris. She holds a BSc in life sciences (08/2012) from University Paris Descartes, France. She published 7 articles in Q1 journals (3 as first author). She published 3 material and methods/parts of book chapters (2 as first author) with a total of 259 citations and an h-index of 7. One of her papers was selected by the editor as the paper of the volume. She is a teaching assistant in the Microbial Diversity Advanced Training course for PhD and Post doc (2024 to 2026, University of Chicago). She is currently supervising 1MSc students supervised 3 master students (2021-4) and 2 BSc student (2023-4), mentored 2 undergraduate students, and 7 summer excellence programs students. Communication and dissemination activities and skills: she won a grant and created an art-science exhibition touring around the world (2023-5) she participated to CIIMAR open day, got interviewed to talk about her COB CIIMAR project on the Israeli national radio (2024), organized and gave a workshop/field trip in schools for children (10-11 years) about microscope and cyanobacteria (France, Israel, 2022), worked for the French institute of Israel and the WIS educational branch by writing monthly general public scientific articles, performing scientific interventions in schools and educational centers, delivering two-day laboratory courses (2015-19). She worked for the Arabic-Jewish center of Jaffa introducing children to science. She was a selected speaker promoting women in science in the Soapbox Science Lisbon (2020). She participated in more than 20 scientific conferences. Among them two Gordon Conferences (USA). She presented 7 posters as first author (one at a GRC). She was an selected speaker in 3 conference (ISME19th 2024, ECMNP 2024) and was invited to present her work in 15 departmental seminars/ student club/ group. She was a moderator, abstract reviewer and jury of 2 CIIMAR BTC conference (2021-2). She reviewed 2 papers in Biotechnology for Biofuel and Bioproducts (2023), she was part of the CIIMAR weekly seminar organizing committee (2021-4), of the CIIMAR GreenLab committee and is part of the WIS association Women in Postdoc abroad. She has received one award. She speaks and write fluent English and French, she speaks fluent Hebrew and Portuguese, she speaks and write beginner Arabic (5 languages).
