Paula S. Branco is Associate professor with Habilitation since December 2018 at NOVA School of Science and Technology. She joined the FNOVA School of Science and Technology in February 1987 as a Researcher and Teaching Assistant in the Group of Disciplines of Organic Synthesis. She completed her PhD in Chemistry, specialization in Organic Chemistry in June 1992, by the same institution. She held a post-doc position from Sept. 1992 to July 1993 at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), FDA, Arkansas USA. The scientific activity has been focused in the target-oriented organic synthesis, and the scientific interests have diversified in several areas always having by base the design and synthesis of new molecules and new reactions, which can contribute to interdisciplinary solutions. Namely, 1) the idealization and synthesis of new dye molecules as sensitizers for solar cells, 2) the functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles based on magnetite with metals or organic ligands, 3) the synthesis of natural products and derivatives with potential biological interest and 4) the synthesis of several metabolites resulting from the action of xenobiotics in the human body. Also, and as a result of a collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry - HOVIONE, the development of new synthesis for APIs was undertaken. She is co-author of 75 international peer-reviewed publications, with 3376 citations (3327 excluding self-citations) at the date of 1/04/22, reflected in an index-h of 32 (ISI WoS). The pedagogical and scientific training involved, with co-supervision, 5 Post Doctoral Fellows, 7 PhD students (four on going), 18 master students (one on going) and 22 scientific research fellows. Funding Projects: 11 in total (4 as PI Coordinator); Ongoing Project: Organic redox mediators for energy conversion; Ref. PTDC/QUI-QOR/7450/2020 (Approved; march 2020-Feb2023).The management activity was extensive, emphasizing the participation in academic management bodies by election or by nomination, as well as the participation as a member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Chemistry. In relation to others highlights of relevant activities counts the participation as expert and technical advice of courts in disputes arising from the violation of intellectual property rights in the event of litigation involving pharmaceutical industry patents since 2013. She participated for two consecutive years (2014 and 2015) in the evaluation process in the Individual Scholarship Competition of FCT-MCE, as a member of the Scoreboard - Chemistry Panel. She is since Dec 2019 the President of the Organic Chemistry Division of SPQ.
