Sofia Reis Brandão (SRB) is graduated in Biochemistry (2015) and Master in Biochemistry with a specialization in Clinical Biochemistry (2017) from the University of Aveiro (UA). Afterward, SRB was granted with a master fellowship (BI/UI51/8085/2018) under the national project “QUIMIOCARDIOTOX” (PTDC/DTP-FTO/1489/2014; Principal Investigator: Dr. Vera Marisa Costa) to apply mass spectrometry-based proteomics and bioinformatics tools for the characterization of the cardiac mitochondrial proteome of CD-1 mice exposed to clinically relevant doses of doxorubicin (DOX) and mitoxantrone (MTX). The work was mainly performed at the Mass Spectrometry Centre (QOPNA & LAQV) of Department of Chemistry-UA (DQ-UA). Then, SRB was granted with a PhD fellowship (SFRH/BD/138202/2018) to achieve the PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto (FFUP). The work was performed at the Laboratory of Toxicology (UCIBIO & REQUIMTE) of FFUP and QOPNA & LAQV of DQ-UA, under the supervision of Dr. Vera Marisa Costa (expertise in toxicological mechanisms associated with several agents in distinct organs, particularly in the cardio-oncology field), Prof. Dr. Rita Ferreira (expertise in proteome profiling and characterization of molecular mechanisms underlying several pathophysiological conditions), and Prof. Dr. Félix Carvalho (expertise in general toxicology and clinical translation). SRB´s research has focused on the molecular changes induced by the treatment with the anticancer agents DOX and MTX in the cardiac muscle of animal models. Thus, SRB has a consolidated knowledge of protein analyses, namely Western and slot blot techniques, related to several energetic metabolism pathways as well as other mitochondria-associated processes, including biogenesis, along with other protein quality control processes such as autophagy and ubiquitin-proteosome pathway. Besides, SRB is an enthusiastic Biochemist willing to share her scientific knowledge, especially the findings achieved through her PhD, with the academic and non-academic public. SRB is the first author of 5 papers, 6 proceedings, 11 oral, and 12 poster communications in national and international scientific meetings. In 2022, the poster “Impacto da quimioterapia com mitoxantrona na regeneração cardíaca” won an honorable mention at the “XIII Biochemistry Day” congress. In 2021, the poster “Unveiling the effects of doxorubicin and mitoxantrone on cardiac metabolism, homeostasis and autophagy in a mice model” won the 3rd prize in the Best Free Communication Award at the “III Iberian Journeys of Toxicology (III JIT)” congress. Moreover, in 2015, SRB received the Award: “The most participating member”, a fellow of the DQ-UA and the Nucleus of Chemistry Students of the Academic Association of the University of Aveiro (NEQ-AAUAv). From 2016 to 2018, she was a member of NEQ-AAUAv, having co-organized several workshops and scientific meetings, namely the “III National Meeting of Biotechnology Students - Solving the present, unlocking the future” which involved about 350 participants. Moreover, SRB participated in seminars taught to Master students and helped in the supervision of laboratorial work of several Master and Undergraduate Students.
