Ana Augusto graduated in Marine Biology and Biotechnology from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria in 2011 and completed a PhD in Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Reading (UK) in 2022. Her doctoral research focused on developing edible coatings based on algae extracts for the preservation of minimally processed fruits, an innovative approach to inhibiting surface browning in fruits with high oxidation rates. This line of research resulted in her first national patent (PT 107369). As a researcher at MARE/ARNET, she actively participates in various national and international research projects focused on applying marine resources for food preservation and sustainability. Currently, she leads the SeaWeed Extracts project (2024–2026, FCT), focusing on studying the mechanisms of action of algae extracts in fruit preservation using molecular tools. As a work package leader for the ORCHESTRA project (2022–2023, FEDER/FCT), she was responsible for studying the use of algae as post-harvest treatment solutions, particularly as preservation agents for long-stored fruits. In the Embalagem do Futuro project (Next Generation, PRR), specifically in 'PPS14 - From Farm to Fork,' she is leading the development of functional, biodegradable, and sustainable packaging materials for fruits, vegetables, and animal products. She also contributed as a team member in EU-funded projects such as SEAFILM (2020–2022, MAR2020) and AMALIA (2016–2019, EASME/EMFF), co-leading the development of food films for fish preservation, which resulted in her European patent (EP3560988). Ana is a guest editor for the journal Applied Sciences and a reviewer for several international scientific journals (e.g., Food Hydrocolloids, LWT, Food Chemistry). She is the author of peer-reviewed scientific articles published in international journals. Ana actively engages in science outreach activities targeting secondary school students, such as "Ocean Open Days," family-oriented events like "The Egg Hunt," and senior-focused initiatives like "Senior Ocean," providing interactive learning opportunities. Her contributions to organizing workshops include promoting direct collaboration with companies in the food industry (e.g., SONAE, SOGUIMA, NIGEL). In 2024, she was recognized on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science as one of the five innovative women in Portuguese science, in an initiative co-funded by COMPETE 2020.
