Helena Melo Amaro (HMA) graduated in Microbiology (15/20) in 2008 by ESB-UCP. In 2005, she worked with Necton, developing an ebook about algae applications. From 2004 to 2010, she worked at CBQF-ESB on algal biotechnology projects. In 2010, she was granted with a PhD scholarship (SFRH/BD/62121/2009), and lab-work was performed at CIIMAR and in collaboration with FFUP, FEUP and i3S. In this period, HMA also received a Certificate of Excellence of Applied Energy (IF 9.746) for the most downloaded in 2011-2012. Before finish PhD, HMA also performed Scientific-Technical Assistance for two companies through CIIMAR(C-FOOD and another in potential development through IAPME) and worked in ZEBRALGRE project (PTDC/CVT-WEL/5207/2014). In 2017, she obtained PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences with distinction by ICBAS. As a postdoc, HMA was researcher of 4 research projects: CAVIAR (FA_05_2017_015), DINOSSAUR (PTDC/BBB-EBE/1374/2014), INSEAFOODINOVMAR (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000035) and the European GENIALG (GENIALG/BPD/2017-059, 6 countries). As well, HMA looked for funding by: (i) participating in the writing of 8 project applications (5 last years-L5Y), one as co-PI, and another in co-promotion with Algaveiro company, and (ii) applying to 2 CEEC applications. In terms of scientific productivity, HMA published 25 papers (13 L5Y) in peer-reviewed international journals mainly in the Biotechnology area, all in the highest impact factor-Q1 and Q2- in their area of knowledge, accumulating an impact factor of 101.35 with 1662 citations (SCOPUS h-index=13; Google scholar h-index=19). HMA also published 14 book chapters (6 L5Y). Besides, HMA was active on national and international science dissemination, being her work was discussed along 26 posters presentation (17 L5Y) and 14 international oral presentations (13 L5Y). Also, she was engaged with science communications actions at CIIMAR, 6 (L5Y). Besides, HMA work was recognised by several International Scientific Journals, she is a Member of Topical advisor panel of Life Journal (IF3.817); a guest editor on a special issue of Applied Sciences Journal (IF2.679); a Review editor for Bioprocess Engineering of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology (IF:5.890); and, a reviewer to 7 Q1 journals. In L5Y, she also established solid Networking collaborations with national (FEUP, UA, UM, i3S, FF, and IPMA) and International (NUIG - Ireland, among others) researchers, resulting in 10 papers, 7 oral presentations and 9 posters at national and international conferences. HMA also attended 2 COST actions to present her work, in the framework of the EUROCAROTEN, a multidisciplinary European network on carotenoid research; and another to attend a Training School in the framework of EUALGAE COST Action, the European network for algal-bioproducts; meeting the most relevant researchers in these fields. HMA was supervisor and co-supervisor of 4 students (2 masters and 2 undergrads) and non-formalised co-supervisor of a PhD student. Since 2017 she collaborated in teaching at 2 masters courses (Functional Biology and Plant Biotechnology-6ECTS, and Aquatic Biological Resources-3ECTS) in FCUP. HMA is also an Executive Director Board member of the Portuguese Association of Applied Algology, and was in the Organising Committee of a national conference and a Webinar in this framework. Besides, she was also on the Scientific Committee of a national conference and an Invited Evaluator on the International one mentioned before, EUROCAROTEN. From 10th June 2021, HMA is on maternity leave. In sum, HMA developed work in algal biotechnology. Her work focused on developing several methodologies on algal processes, namely in (a) optimisation on algal biomass and bioactive compounds production; and (b) evaluation of algal biomass potential.
