Pedro E Antunes is the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC), the major Portuguese Reference Center for Heart Transplantation, performing over 1800 surgeries per year, namely heart valve repair, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures and pediatric surgeries. PA is also Invited Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (FMUC), responsible for the Cardiothoracic Surgery module of the Integrated Master's degree in Medicine. PA actively participates in advanced training of Medical and Pharmacy students, which reflects in the supervision of 10 MSc and 2 PhD theses. Moreover, PA participated as arguer in 2 PhD theses. His research has been focused on the improvement of cardiac surgery techniques, as well as risk prediction models, mainly in the context of aortic and mitral valve repair and replacement and non-cardioplegic coronary artery bypass surgery. PA has also been strongly collaborating with Basic Science groups devoted to study the physiology and mechanical properties of blood vessels, as well as the molecular mechanisms underlying injury-induced cardiac remodeling and intercellular communication defects. These activities echoed in over 46 publications from Web of Science Core Collection (WoScc), including Circulation Research, Heart and The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, with 317 citations and an h-index of 10.
