Duarte Nuno Carvalho (born in 1992 in Lousada, Porto, Portugal) is a dedicated professional with a strong biotechnology, marine and materials science background, specializing in health-related areas. Currently, he works as post-doctoral researcher at the BRAIN (Biomedical Research and Innovation) group at INESC TEC, FEUP, U. Porto, focusing on health and computational science, that includes signal acquisition, processing, and machine learning. Previously, he worked as a senior research technician and later as a Junior Researcher at the Glial Cell Biology Group and Molecular and Analytical Medicine Lab (i3S and Faculty of Medicine, U. Porto). In these roles, his primary focus was developing innovative molecular-based biosensing technologies for neurodegenerative and heart diseases, leveraging his expertise in biotechnology. Regarding his academic background, he holds a degree in Marine Biology and Biotechnology from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL), School of Tourism and Maritime Technology of Peniche (ESTM) Portugal, which he completed in 2015. He later obtained a master's degree in Marine Resources Biotechnology at ESTM, working at the CETEMARES institute in Peniche. During his second academic year, he had the opportunity to engage in scientific activities with the 3B's Research Group – Research Institute of Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics, University of Minho. This work resulted in his master's thesis, completed in 2017, and the publication of three scientific articles (one as first author), one patent as the main inventor, and three scientific posters at international conferences. All these works were related to both marine and health sciences, specifically in the sustainable exploration and valorization of marine resources and their by-products, for the development of innovative biomaterials for biomedical applications under the cartilage tissue engineering approach, health related sciences linked to green and blue technology areas. In 2018, after completing his master's degree, he had the opportunity to join the 3B's Research Group due to a research grant, where he continued his work exploring new biomaterials also linked to marine products. In September of 2018, he started the Ph.D. degree in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cells (TERM&SC), funded by "Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia" (FCT, Portugal), ref. PD/BD/143044/2018 and COVID/BD/153028/2022 (exceptional scholoarship for COVID mitigation - 5 months financial), under the supervision of Doctor Tiago H. Silva from 3B's Research Group (Portugal) and Doctor Michael Gelinsky from Technical University of Dresden (Germany) which he spends 4 months in Dresden for apply him marine research to 3D bioprinting approach, resulting in 1 scientific article and 1 poster as first author. As a result of his entire Ph.D. work, he has contributed to 6 scientific publications as first author, 4 reviews, 1 book chapter, and participated in international conferences, which resulted in 2 oral communications and 17 poster communications, 9 of them as first author. Additionally, he has worked as a designer of scientific illustrations for various publications, including scientific articles, reviews, among others, and he is proficient in 3D printing, utilizing natural/synthetic polymers, resin and various filament types, and also operating CNC machines for cutting and engraving. Additionally, he has experience with different software for data analysis and processing, including statistical analysis. In general, Duarte Nuno is the author of 11 experimental scientific publications, 4 reviews, 2 oral presentation and 18 posters in international conferences, 1 book chapter, 1 patent, and another one in submitting process both as the main inventor.
