Márcio Carocho obtained his bachelor in Biotechnologic Engineering in 2009 and a Master¿s degree in Biotechnology in 2011, both from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), Portugal. He concluded his European PhD in Pharmacy in 2016, from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, winning the prize of best thesis of the year at the faculty. During his PhD he worked in food science, and chemistry of natural products, developing new foods and using plant extracts as natural ingredients and preservatives, having performed two research stays abroad, one at the Mountain Research Centre (CIMO) of IPB, and another at the Institute of Biological Research Sinisa Stankovic at the University of Belgrade in Serbia. He then worked as a Post-Doctoral fellow (SFRH/BPD/114650/2016) having won the position from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), to carry out research at CIMO and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in Portugal, culminating in the development of a patented food coating solution, ¿SpraySafe¿, which was the winner of the "European Social Innovation Competition" in 2019, receiving 50.000€ awarded by the European Commission. According to SCOPUS, he has an h-index of 17 and 3078 citations from the 60 scientific articles he has published. He has also published 14 book chapters and edited a book in 2023 through Springer focusing on plant secondary metabolites. He has taken part in over 80 scientific events, having been an invited lecturer at 12 conferences, and presented at various science dissemination forums. He has been a member of 18 financed national and international research projects. He is currently an editor of 7 indexed scientific journals, having led 10 special issues. He currently supervises 5 PhD students, having been the supervisor of 12 master's sudents . He lectures several subjects at IPB, related to chemistry, biochemistry and statistics. He is an evaluator of scientific projects for the Government of Peru as well as the Portuguese Erasmus+ and National Innovation Agency (ANI), and has been awarded 11 scientific prizes and distinctions throughout his career. He is a member of the Workers Commission of IPB and a member of the board of ANICT, the Portuguese Association of Researchers in Science and Technology.
