BSousa is a junior researcher at the Cancer Metastasis group at i3S, focusing on elucidating the mechanisms underlying the survival and therapeutic resistance of circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients, with the ultimate aim of establishing a precision oncology platform. BSousa performed her Biochemistry BSc trainee at IPATIMUP, in 2007, being immediately awarded with a research grant in a collaboration project with SANOFI-Aventis. During this period, she built and molecularly characterize a large series of breast carcinomas, pinpointing specific biomarkers that were able to better identify basal-like breast cancer (PMID:20552547). In 2014, she completed her PhD in Pathology and Molecular Genetics, at ICBAS. BSousa demonstrated that cell-cell adhesion awarded by P-cadherin expression plays a role in breast cancer cell metabolism (PMID:25269858). This work was supervised by Joana Paredes and developed at Ipatimup (Porto, Portugal), with two international stays at Patterson Institute for Cancer Research, PICR (Manchester, UK), and at R&D department of Sanofi-Aventis (Toulouse, France). In 2015, she was awarded with a competitive FCT Postdoc grant to pursuit the ongoing projects, specifically on the role of P-cadherin in the oxidative stress impairment, and its impact in the metastatic process (PMID: 32920119). In this context, she joined Paulo Oliveira's lab, at UC-Biotech, Cantanhede, where she expanded her technical skills and solid expertise in cancer metabolism, namely with the Seahorse Technology, thus going further in her independent pathway. During this period, BSousa was also involved in the conception and writing of several funded grants, in which I participated as task leader, providing wet-lab support, as well as data analysis on her areas of expertise. She still published a review manuscript (PMID:31010154) and a book chapter (PMID: 31134496). In 2019, BSousa was awarded a Junior Researcher contract at i3S. She established in vitro 3D breast cancer cell spheroids and immune spheroids as models to answer the questions raised in her work, thus implementing a new scientific topic within her host group, dedicated to the study the mechanisms associated to the survival of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). As a member of the Porto Comprehensive Cancer Center (P.CCC)-Raquel Seruca consortium, she implemented a lab with specialized equipment, to isolate and characterize CTCs: the FDA-approved CellSearch, as well as DEPArrayPLUS technology, for which she is one of the three national certified users. This opportunity gave her the know-how, and the opportunity to close collaborate with clinical oncologists, enhancing the impact of her research line. During her career path, BSousa still actively pursued specific activities towards an independent career. She supervised one master student (2017), one international internship (2019), as well as she is currently co-supervising one master and two FCT-funded PhD students, recently awarded by Fulbright Portugal, Liga Portuguesa contra o Cancro and Sociedade Portuguesa de Oncologia. She is actively involved in scientific diffusion by the frequent invitations to lecture at GABBA and BEB PhD programs, as well as in medicine graduation at FMUP. She also attended different workshops/courses, such as Animal Science (FELASA C) and Research Project Management, and participated as an evaluator in national meetings. Her solid track record, in the last 5 years (including one maternity leave in 2021), is reflected in 7 papers (2 papers as 1st author and 5 as co-author) in international peer-reviewed journals and one book chapter. In total, I authored 28 publications, specifically being 1st author of 3 original papers and one review. The capacity to disseminate her results is reflected in the frequent invitations to speak in international cancer metabolism meetings, as well as in being selected for oral communications from first-author abstracts.
