I am a neuroscientist with over 15 years of experience in research. I have contributed to understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying adult neurogenesis and brain plasticity and their modulation by lifestyle. I am currently leading different projects focused on microglia involvement in adult neurogenesis and the generation of a human cellular platform for personalized medicine. I graduated from the University of Salamanca in 2001 with a degree in Biochemistry and completed my PhD at the Institute of Neuroscience of Castilla y León (INCyL, 2001-2007) in 2007 under the supervision of Dr. Alonso and Dr. Weruaga. My thesis focused on plasticity and neurodegeneration in the olfactory bulb and resulted in 9 publications and a patent. During my first postdoctoral stage (2007-2008), I spent 9 months at the laboratory of Dr. Cooper (King's College of London, UK) studying adult neurogenesis in animal models and human brain samples of Batten's disease. Then (2008-2011), I continued my postdoctoral studies at the laboratory of Dr. Saura (Institute of Neuroscience, Autonoma University of Barcelona), where we demonstrated that environmental stimulation prevents cognitive deficits and increases adult neurogenesis in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). I also participated in revealing the role of CRTC1 (CREB-regulated transcription coactivator-1) in memory (two papers in J. Neuroscience). In 2011, I moved to the laboratory of Dr. Malva (Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, Portugal). We demonstrated that an acute and systemic inflammatory stimulus induces a long-term decrease in neurogenesis and memory. In 2014, I was the principal investigator of a project (2014-2015) related to the influence of diet on adult neurogenesis. I also contributed to analyzing the effects of hyperglycemia and a dietetic supplement in adult neurogenesis in an AD mouse model. In 2015, I joined the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience as an Ikerbasque Research Fellow, co-leading research projects with Dr. Sierra to analyze the effects of phagocytic microglia on adult neurogenesis (J. Neuroscience). I also studied the impact of a balanced and deficient diet on omega-3 (Int. J. Mol Sci. 2022) and developed image analysis tools. In 2021, I joined the Neuronal Plasticity and Neurorepair group at the INCyL. I have been an Associate professor at the University of Salamanca since 2022. Here, I analyze lifestyle factors and disease effects on the brain and study the integration of bone marrow-derived cells in the central nervous system. SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTION. 3 six-year research periods awarded. Participation in 17 research projects, leading 7 (3 from the Spanish and 2 from the Portugal governments, 1 from Interreg Europe, and 1 from a private foundation I have been a member of the editorial board of two research journals and reviewed manuscripts for more than 20 journals. At the end of 2021, I received the i3 excellence certificate from the Spanish government. I have an extensive network of collaborations, many of which have been consolidated through ongoing or past research projects. I am also actively involved in science communication and outreach, co-organizing events such as the Pint of Science Festival and giving talks and writing (Investigación y Ciencia 2017 and The Conversation 2020) to a variety of audiences. I have supervised 9 Master's and 5 PhD students and have a track record of working with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
