Marta Andrade works in the area of Engineering and Technology with an emphasis on Materials Engineering. She completed her PhD in Technological Chemistry by the University of Lisboa (2016) upon photocatalytic studies using carbon materials for the degradation of aqueous contaminants. During her PhD she spent three months abroad, at Instituto Nacional del Carbón, in Spain. She was a post-doc fellow of the European project LIFE Impetus-Improving current barriers for controlling pharmaceuticals compounds in urban wastewater treatment plants. She has more than a decade of experience in the preparation, characterization and application of carbon nanomaterials as adsorbents in both gas and liquid phase. One of her main research areas was the synthesis of activated carbons by chemical and physical activation of biomass and in the use of innovative methodologies as hydrothermal carbonization and their textural characterization and surface chemistry characterization. Her current research interests relate to the application of nanoporous materials in adsorption and catalytic applications She is currently involved in the project EMPOWER+- Engineered and reusable nanoporous carbons for advanced water treatment, at CQE-FCUL. She published 28 papers in international peer-review journals. Her work was cited nearly 780 times contributing to an h-index of 16, the average citations per item being 26. She is co-author of two book chapters. In her professional activities interacted with 96 collaborators co-authorship of scientific papers. She also presented several oral and poster communications in national and international conferences and has received three awards. She was involved as a team member in several research projects financed by FCT. Marta Andrade has also been involved in the supervision of master students, the guidance of an ERASMUS student, and tutoring in Summer internships. She took part in the evaluation committee of the dissertation of two master's students and two graduate students. She was involved in the organization of four international conferences. She was the coordinator for the Catalysis Session in an important dissemination activity, CQE Days 2020, choosing the most representative works and moderating the presentation session. Marta Andrade is currently integrated into the project EMPOWER+-Engineered and reusable nanoporous carbons for advanced water treatment as a junior stage researcher at CQE-FCUL and LNEC. This project is focused on the development of new high-performing granular (GACs) and powdered (PACs) activated carbons and reusable magnetic PACs, prepared by physical activation of pine nut shells for improved water treatment. In the last five years, Marta Andrade suspended her laboratory activities two times for maternity leave (in 2015 and in 2018/2019).
