Dr. Pedro Martins has investigated the mechanics and structure of female soft biological tissues and medical implants since he started his PhD in 2004. With the thesis, "Experimental and Numerical Studies of Soft Biological Tissues", he studied the nonlinear mechanical behavior of the human female pelvic tissues and developed experimental and data fitting techniques, with a PhD fellowship from (FCT) Portuguese Science Foundation. With colleagues from UNIZAR (Spain), he developed constitutive models for the mechanical behavior of vaginal tissue that included the nonlinear elastic and the inelastic (damage region) behavior. The mechanical characterization of female pelvic tissues was extended in collaboration with colleagues from UFMG (Brazil), allowing a broad overview of the mechanical behavior of pelvic tissues and organs. In parallel he studied the mechanical properties of implants (textile meshes) used in pelvic floor repair in collaboration with colleagues from UNIFESP (Brazil). He has experience in research as well as teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses. He has supervised 5 PhD students (2 finished, 3 ongoing), 15 Master students (15 finished) and 2 Post-doc researchers. He has been a researcher in 17 R&D projects and the PI of 4 of those projects. During his Post-Doctoral years, he received 2 Post-Doc fellowships and a research contract (FCT), having participated in several research projects and being the PI in 4. These projects provided research funding to support 2 (ongoing) PhD theses and 15 Masters theses, in subjects aligned with his main research line. Project UROSPHINX studied the male urinary sphincter and pelvic tissues in general. This funding supported a PhD work in collaboration with colleagues from KU Leuven (Belgium), which led to investigations on the mechanics, and structure of female pelvic tissues, using animal models. One outcome was the linear correlation between collagen content and nonlinear mechanical behavior of vaginal tissue. The Histologically Motivated (HM) parameter, combining Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden model coefficients, fitted the correlation. The HM parameter allows to estimate the mechanical behavior of pelvic tissues using histological information. Other supported PhD research was an experimental analysis of rupture of breast implants. This research in collaboration with plastic surgeons, detected fatigue phenomena in implants, pointing to mechanisms of shell failure, and the need to improve fabrication techniques. His current research includes the mechanical compatibility between breast soft tissues and biodegradable scaffolds (ongoing PhD supervision) in collaboration with Gent University and minimally invasive solutions for human motor rehabilitation (ongoing PhD supervision) based on electroactive polymers. This research is supported by project MimBI (FCT) aimed at the mechanical improvement of breast implants, which includes the development and modeling of soft, biomimetic, and biocompatible materials. Since January 2020, he has been a visiting scholar with the Applied Mechanics and Bioengineering (AMB) research group from the Aragón Institute of Engineering Research (i3A), UNIZAR (Spain). As of November 2021, he is an ARAID Researcher, holding a research contract with the Aragonese Foundation for Research and Development (ARAID), and having i3A has host institution. He has been the director and coordinator of the Biomechanics laboratory at INEGI (Porto, Portugal) until November 2021. The main focus of the laboratory is to provide the tools and means for the mechanical characterization of soft materials, mainly (but not exclusively), soft biological tissues, soft implant materials and biomaterials. He is author and co-author of 56 research papers published in international peer reviewed journals, with over 1800 citations in SCOPUS (over 2600 with Google scholar metrics) and an h-index of 19. He authored and co-authored over 170 conference works.
