Ana Gomes finished her PhD in 2011 in Chemistry at University of Aveiro, in collaboration with Biological Department of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. During her PhD studies have been involved in the development of new pharmacological entities for the Photodynamic Therapy of tumours. In 2012 Ana Gomes was awarded with a post-Doc fellowship to work on the photoinactivations tumours and microorganisms. Since the beginning of this post-Doc she had the opportunity to make internships in Universidade Federal Fluminense and in Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), both at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; new promising compounds were developed and are being tested in the inactivation of parasites responsible for several neglected diseases and in the antimicrobial photoinactivation of pathogenic bacteria. Also, during this post-Doc, Ana Gomes had the opportunity to join the team of the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences (IBILI), Faculty of Medicine -University of Coimbra where she developed studies on the photodynamic effect of new pharmacological drugs in the bladder cancer cells. Between 2018 and February of 2021, Ana Gomes was Auxiliar Researcher in the project Agroforwealth at CESAM and Biology Department in the University of Aveiro, where she was involved in the design, implementation, and interpretation of in vitro and in vivo assays for the evaluation of the beneficial effects on health of natural plant extracts to achieve new nutraceutical products. Ana Gomes is the author of more than 60 original articles published in international peerreviewed journals, with an h-index of 19 (Source: Scopus, 2/2025). Additionally, she had published 2 book chapters, 3 conference proceeding communications, 20 oral communications and more than 40 poster communications. Her vast experience has been recognized by journals editors as being part of Journal scientific Committee, through the solicitation for manuscript peer-review. Ana Gomes is also involved in pedagogic activities: in the cosupervision of PhD students and post-doc students and in the supervisor of graduate students and Master students, in the areas of Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences and Dental Medicine and had participate in academic juries. She also teaches the classes of Microbiology, Pharmacology, Proteomics and Biomolecular Laboratories. Nowadays, Ana Gomes is Auxiliary Researcher at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, integrated member of research unit Centro de Investigação Interdisciplinar em Saúde (CIIS) where she is involved in projects focused on oral microbiome characterization and identification of salivary biomarkers to monitor and/or diagnose oral and systemic diseases, namely periodontitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. More recently, Ana Gomes is coordinator of CatolicaBiobank (Viseu centre), a support structure at CIIS-UCP that aids the medical community and collaborators in implementing clinical trials and establishing translational and clinical research projects.
