Manuel Vilanova currently is Full Professor of Immunology and Vice-Dean at ICBAS - School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of Universidade do Porto. At ICBAS MV coordinates curricular units in the fields of immunology and infection and currently directs the PhD programme on Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology Applied to Health Sciences (BiotechHealth). MV graduated in Biochemistry by U.Porto in 1988 and joined the Laboratory of Immunology at ICBAS in 1989, working under the supervision of Prof. Mário Arala Chaves. MV defended the PhD thesis in Biomedical Sciences at ICBAS in 1999. He was PI in 5 funded projects and participated as co-PI/team member in > 20 other funded projects, mainly in the areas of immunology and infection. MV supervised/co-supervised circa 30 PhD students, and 5 post-docs. He authored/co-authored > 120 research articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters and patents, mainly in the fields of immunology, infection and microbiology. His studies particularly addressed immunobiological mechanisms operating in hosts infected with patogens with high impact in human or animal health, such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, Candida albicans, and Neospora caninum. He is/was Editorial Board member in international scientific journals, including "Carbohydrate Polymers" and "Scientific Reports". Manuel Vilanova directs since 2005 the Immunobiology group of Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular (IBMC) at Porto, now integrating the Instituto de Inovação e Investigação em Saúde (I3S) of U.Porto. He presided the Portuguese Society for Immunology in 2012-2015.
