Flávia Castro is currently Junior Researcher and Project leader at the Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S), University of Porto. Flávia was recently awarded by the Portuguese Government fund "Stimulus of Scientific Employment, Individual Support 2021 (CEECIND)" to pursuit her research towards independence at i3S in Portugal (ranked the 1st place in the Medical Engineering and Biotechnology Panel) in the potential of breast cancer-immune crosstalk by extracellular vesicles towards immunotherapy. She is currently a PI of a project funded by FCT (RADIORESISTANCE, 250K€) to investigate the immune-mediated mechanisms involved in breast cancer radioresistance, with focus on the development of new therapies. She co-supervises 3 PhD students. Flávia developed her international PhD studies in new biomaterials-based immunotherapies for cancer treatment. She started her PhD in 2015 at Prof Maria Oliveira lab at i3S (Porto, Portugal), which expertise allowed the development of unique immunomodulatory tool to reprogram tumor microenvironment. In 2017 she joined for almost 1 year Prof Olivier de Wever´s Lab, one of the most renown groups in Cancer Research, at Ghent University Hospital (Belgium). This technology was highlighted in the media (printed press), inspired an FCT-funded project - MAGICIAM (PTDC/BTM-SAL/31859/2017,250K€) in which she was team member, 6 publications (citations: 875, Scopus), 17 oral and 19 poster presentations as 1st author, 1MSc project co-supervised by her, and 2 publications as co-last author. This work was recognized by the scientific community, through 12 distinct awards/distinctions, including Julia Polak European Doctoral Thesis Award 2020 and Best Student Award 2019, both by European Society of Biomaterials (ESB), 3 travel grants to participate in highly recognized international meetings by European Association for Cancer Research (EACR), and 2 travel grants by European Commission sponsored COST Missions and by Portuguese Society of Immunology (SPI) to pursuit her PhD studies at Ghent University, in Belgium. Also, she was awarded with 2 best poster presentation prizes in national/international meetings, one by Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro (LPCC). In the end of 2019, she started a Post-Doctoral position at Nanomedicines & Translational Drug Delivery Group, led by Prof Bruno Sarmento, at i3S and was responsible for a FCT-funded project (PTDC/BTM-SAL/30034/2017) to evaluate cancer nanomedicines in in vivo models. She published 1st authored 4 additional publications at high-impact J Control Release and Adv Drug Deliv Rev and co-authored a Nature Methods publication in an international consortium. Overall, she has a h-hindex of 14, cumulative impact factor of 121 and a total of 1250 citations (Scopus). She interacted with more than 146 authors (+7 nationalities), publishing in total 23 articles, 4 conference proceedings, 2 book chapters, and participated in one patent 1 patent (PCT/PT2021/050025). Flávia gave invited seminars, lectures and presented her work at several national/international meetings (21 oral communications and 20 posters, as 1st author). In 2021, she was awarded with best oral communication by Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro (LPCC) and in 2022 with 1st Raquel Seruca Award at ASPIC meeting. In 2023, she did a Short-Term Scientific Mission granted by COST at Prof Alfonso Calvo's Lab, at CIMA, University of Navarra. Alongside her research activities, Flávia had been part of the team of 6 FCT-funded projects and 1 national consortium (4M€). She had also actively mentoring and supervising 1 Post-Doc, 6 PhDs and 8 MSc students. Flávia is invited peer-reviewed for several journals, as ACS Nano and Frontiers in Immunol. She has been also Invited Lecturer at CESPU, FMUP and ICBAS. She has participated in several outreach activities, such as general public/schools science dissemination. She is Ambassador of EACR, and was nominee as one of the 2020 University of Porto personalities.
