Victoria Leiro got her PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), in December 2007. Even before her PhD defense, she was hired in the context of a CENIT program (2006-2010) of the Spanish “Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial”, which was launched to stimulate the public–private cooperation in industrial research. The project, carried out in collaboration with the Spanish company of biotechnology Pharmamar S.A., consisted of the synthesis of dendrimers for delivery of anticarcinogenic drugs. Since 2011, she is a researcher (FCT BPD 2010 post-doctoral grant; contracted Researcher since 2017; Assistant Researcher since 2022) in the nBTT-nanoBiomaterials for Targeted Therapies Group at i3S-Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde and INEB-Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica (Porto, Portugal). In the highly competitive 2021 Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus from FCT, Leiro was granted with a contract to work as an Assistant Researcher at i3S. Her research is focused on the development of new biodegradable nanobiomaterials (biodegradable dendrimers), as well as their application as vectors of different therapeutic nucleic acids and drugs, and bioimaging agents for different neuro-applications. Recently, she is also exploring these dendrimers as nucleic acid vectors targeted to the cartilaginous tissue of the joint and intervertebral disc; and also as vectors of therapeutics for cancer treatment in a collaboration with a biopharmaceutical company. Additionally, the development, functionalization, characterization and biological evaluation of different biomaterials of great interest for several biomedical applications (including biomaterials with antimicrobial properties or for use in regenerative medicine) are also among her research interests. Victoria Leiro has participated in 18 research projects. Her scientific production includes 25 documents: 22 articles in peer reviewed international journals (100% in Q1; 12 as first author; 5 as corresponding senior author), 2 book chapters and has 1 patent registered, already granted in US, and licensed to a pharma company. VL has received 20 awards and/or honors. She is co-supervising 3 PhD theses, supervised 12 MSc theses, 1 undergraduate internship, 8 MSc Research Assistants, and she was mentor of more than 30 students. She is a referee for international peer-reviewed journals. VL has participated in numerous conferences (2 keynote, 6 invited talk, 48 oral communications and 77 posters), numerous workshops, advanced courses, and in activities of scientific outreach (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela and Universidade do Porto). She is member of the European Society for Biomaterials and Galician Nanomedicine Network.
