Catarina Brito is the Principal Investigator (tenure) of ITQB NOVA. She has been the Head of the Advanced Cell Models Lab of iBET and ITQB NOVA since 2014; currently leading a team of 15 researchers: 6 post-docs, 5 PhD students (individual grants), 2 MSc research fellows, and 2 MSc students. C Brito’s research focuses on microenvironment-driven modulation of disease progression and targeted therapy responses, through the development and interrogation of in vitro and ex vivo models of the disease microenvironment (emphasis on immunosuppressive breast carcinomas and high-grade gliomas; and other CNS pathologies). Currently, her team investigates myeloid cell-driven inflammatory and immunosuppressive microenvironments, along 2 central research lines: 1. Neuron-glia crosstalk in neuroinflammation and early tissue response to viral vectors; 2. Macrophage-tumor cell crosstalk in immunosuppression and resistance to immunomodulatory therapies. The group has pioneered cell-based strategies to tackle challenges in the imminent areas of cancer immunotherapies and viral vector-based gene therapies. Background: PhD in Biochemistry & Cell Biology (2007), by ITQB-NOVA (PT) and Degree in Biochemistry (2001, University of Lisbon). PhD training - glycobiology and intracellular trafficking in human cells, Glycobiology Lab (ITQB-NOVA) and Membrane Traffic in Neuronal & Epithelial Morphogenesis Lab (Institut Jacques Monod, France). Postdoctoral training in stem cell biotechnology and cell-based assay development (iBET, PT). Funding: PI/co-PI of 18 projects + team member of 31 projects, funded by FCT (5+12), EC and Innovative Medicines Initiative (EC & EFPIA) (2+9); iNOVA4Health (PT) and iBET internal calls (7+10), and the Pharmaceutical Industry (4 as PI). Productivity: 83 articles in peer-reviewed journals, 26 as senior/corresponding author, and 8 book chapters; h-index=28 (Scopus), over 3500 citations. Invited lectures in conference cycles and international courses, academic (22) and industrial (7); Invited lecturer in international conferences (49), of over 100 oral communications and 150 posters as presenting/corresponding.
