Bruno Neves (BN) earned his degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Coimbra in 2006 and subsequently pursued a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Centre for Neurosciences and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, and the Innate Immunity and Inflammation Unit, Instituto de Biologia y Genética Molecular, University of Valladolid, Spain, completing it in 2011. From 2011 to 2018, BN served as an invited professor at the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro and the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Coimbra. Since 2018, BN held the position of Assistant Professor and Director of the Biomedical Sciences degree at the Medical Sciences Department of the University of Aveiro. From the same date, he is a Principal Investigator and member of the Scientific Board at the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED). During his Ph.D, BN made significant contributions to the field of Dendritic Cell (DCs) immunobiology by unraveling the molecular mechanisms by which haptens and pathogen/danger associated molecular patterns trigger DC activation. These pioneering findings allowed the development of novel dendritic cell-based in vitro test for identifying haptens in the cosmetic and chemistry industries. This achievement resulted in an international patent (WO/2012/148297) and the establishment of a start-up company, Toxfinder Lda, where BN serve as the co-founder and CEO. BN scientific and entrepreneurial endeavors have been recognized with several prizes, including the Bolsa de Ignição INOV.Capital, Caixa de Crédito Agricola Award for innovation and entrepreneurship, and the COTEC Idea to Product Portugal Competition. Throughout his scientific journey, BN have played key roles in coordinating or participating as a team member in 22 national and international R&D projects allowing him to secure the mentorship of 2 post-doctoral researchers, 10 Ph.D. students (with 6 ongoing), 28 M.Sc. students (with 4 ongoing), and 19 B.Sc. students. BN authored 8 book chapters and published over 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals such as Journal for Immunotherapy of Cancer, American Journal of Pathology, Small, Advanced Functional Materials, Pharmacological Research, and Frontiers in Immunology, accumulating over 5600 citations, and achieving an h-index of 23 (Scopus). The scientific findings generated within these works led to 3 international patents (WO/2024/013711, WO/2023/148531 and WO/2012/148297) and 1 international patent application (P1303-7WO). Currently, BN primary focus is on developing innovative antitumor immunotherapeutic strategies and understanding how danger sensing mechanisms and stress responses are integrated into innate immune cells. He is actively engaged in translational research and have collaborated extensively with a leading national pharmaceutical company, Tecnimede Pharmaceutical Group, in the establishment of a pilot-scale facility to produce clinical grade cellular products (UpCells). Within the framework of this collaboration, BN is spearheading the coordination of the development of a next-generation DC-based vaccine for pancreatic and pulmonary tumors. BN is actively involved as a referee for several leading journals in the field of Biomedicine and as an Expert Evaluator for institutions such as the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), Portuguese National Agency for Innovation and Wellcome Trust.
