Sandra Hilário (SHilário) is graduated in Agronomic Engineering (2012) from the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV), completed her Master's Degree in Microbiology (2017) and her Ph.D. in Biology (specialization in Microbiology) (2023) at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, University of Aveiro (CESAM/UA), financially supported by a 4-year FCT grant. During her bachelor's degree SHilário was recognized by the endowment of a merit scholarship and awarded for best business plan presented in national entrepreneurship contests with a trademark registration at INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property, nº 483760). The innovative idea aimed to obtain biomass pellets produced by forestry and agricultural residues as an eco-friendly energy source for biofuel production. In the last 5 years, SHilário's research has been focused on microbial diversity, molecular (micro)biology, mycology, phylogenetics, bioinformatics and genomics. She has also dedicated herself to researching the interactions between crops, fungal pathogens, and environmental stresses. SHilário's work has led to groundbreaking assessments of the blueberry-pathogen pathosystem under stress conditions, with implications for sustainable agriculture and crop management. Between July 2023 to March 2024, SHilário was a doctorate researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) from the University of Porto (UP), developing work in an FCT-funded project (249K EUR) focused on sustainable agriculture, by developing microbial biofertilizers and biopesticides for the management of the red palm weevil. Currently, SHilário is researcher at GreenUPorto - Sustainable Agrifood Production Research Centre (GreenUPorto, UP), working on the Horizon Europe funded project (5M EUR) "WHEATBIOME" that aims to unravel the potential of the wheat microbiome for the development of healthier, more sustainable and resilient wheat-derived food & feed products. Between 2019-2024, SHilário (co)authored 15 communications in national and international congresses; was invited speaker in 1 advanced course in "Bioinformatics for Microbiologists" and in classes of Phytopathology and Evolution and Microbial Diversity (Biology course) at UA; published 25 WoS papers (1 in Fungal Divers IF: 20.3) and 2 encyclopedia entries; and earned recognition from the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM) and the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS). The international visibility of SHilário's work is supported by more than 220 citations and an h-index of 9 (Scopus). She has also contributed to the research community and the broader society as reviewer in 17 SCI journals, co-guest editing role for Microorganisms. SHilário was involved in teaching activities, by mentoring undergraduate (3) and MSc students (5) from UA, 1 research fellow from UP, and 1 PhD student from the University of Padova (Italy). She has also engaged in knowledge transfer through the co-organization of international (1) and national (2) meetings/conferences and participation as scientific monitor at summer schools and workshops. SHilário had the opportunity to engage with stakeholders from Portuguese companies (Deifil Green Biotechnology, Mirtilusa, Acegrow) which helped her to gain skills in reducing the gap between science and the general public.
