Vânia Andreia Malheiro Proença

Vânia Proença is an Assistant Researcher (FCT CEEC Individual 2017) at MARETEC/LarSyS, Instituto Superior Técnico. With a PhD in Ecology from the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon in 2009, her research primarily focuses on biodiversity patterns and processes, as well as the use of biodiversity data, indicators, and models to quantify and monitor biodiversity change and its effects on ecosystem functions and services at various scales, from local to global. V. Proença has authored more than 40 scientific publications (Scopus h-index=19, Google Scholar h-index=26, and i-10 index=42) and participated in 16 projects, primarily focused on biodiversity and ecosystem services across various scales. During her PhD, she contributed to the Portuguese Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (ptMA) and to the MA Sub-Global Assessments activities, later co-editing the full report of the ptMA. She has also worked on the EcoSensing project, dedicated to improving biodiversity monitoring tools and developing biodiversity indicators, and has been involved in projects such as ECOPOTENTIAL (Horizon 2020) and LIFE Food & Biodiversity, which aim to integrate biodiversity indicators into certification schemes. In the past five years, V. Proença served as the scientific coordinator of the SILVPAST operational group, in partnership with the Terraprima business group, promoting the use of large domestic herbivores for sustainable landscape management. V. Proença is also the project leader at IST-ID of SILVANUS, an H2020 project dedicated to sustainable forest management aimed at increasing forest resilience and preventing wildfires, and the leader of STEP UP’s (Horizon Europe) task on biodiversity indicators applied to European livestock production systems. She coordinates ecosystem monitoring services delivered by Terraprima to R&D projects focusing on biodiversity performance of grazing systems. As part of these and other related initiatives, she is involved in the development of indicators to evaluate and monitor biodiversity in its multiple dimensions, and which can serve to guide management and inform policy reporting requirements. V. Proença has extensively contributed to national and international initiatives on biodiversity and ecosystem services, starting with the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and extending to serving as a core team member of the Technical Report on scenarios for biodiversity and ecosystem services in the 21st century, commissioned by the Convention on Biological Diversity to inform the Global Biodiversity Outlook 3. She has also been involved in the GEO BON Terrestrial species working group, served as a Lead Author and Contributing Author in four IPBES reports, and was nominated for the Technical Advisory Group on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services of the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (hosted by FAO). She is a member of the IUCN SSC Species Monitoring Specialist Group. In addition to her research and contribution to initiatives, V. Proença has supervised multiple PhD students, MSc students, and research assistants. V.Proença teaches a course on Biodiversity Management in the Masters in Studies of Environment and Sustainability at ISCTE-IUL, and contributes regularly with invited talks and lectures in MSc and PhD courses and capacity building initiatives. She reviews regularly for top-tier scientific journals and is an Associate Editor for Diversity and Distributions.
