Mélanie Audrey Gomes Barbosa holds a BSc degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (2015). In 2017, she completed her MSc degree in Toxicology and Environmental Contamination at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of Abel Salazar, after presenting her dissertation titled "Obesity and environmental pollutants: a reason for concern?" that was carried out in the Endocrine Disruptors and Emergent Contaminants (EDEC) group of the Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), under the supervision of Dr. Miguel Santos. Her stay at CIIMAR has allowed her to publish her first two papers in Q1 peer-reviewed journals in that area, one of them as the first author which was awarded by the 2019 IACOBUS Program - Scientific publications. From June 2020 to October 2021, she worked on her Master Research Fellowship (LOOKER_2_BI_M) for the project "Biomarkers for minimal residual disease" at the Cancer Drug Resistance group of the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP/I3S). In 2020, she was awarded a PhD scholarship, by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), to work on the thesis titled "Modern 3D drug screening methodologies for the identification of novel antitumor drugs capable of counteracting multidrug resistance in cancer", inserted in the PhD program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto. Recently, she published a review paper, in the topic of her thesis, in the Q1 peer-reviewed journal Cancers, titled "3D cell culture models as recapitulators of the tumor microenvironment for the screening of anti-cancer drugs".
