I got my PhD in Engineering and Technology Sciences (2010/03) from ITQB-NOVA. My PhD was done in Nutraceuticals and Controlled Delivery (NCD) Lab iBET/ITQB-NOVA, and focused on the development of functional ingredients derived from apples and cherries using novel extraction technologies and phytochemical/bioactivity assays. Part of my studies were done at Univ Coimbra (H. de Sousa Lab) where I acquired experience in supercritical fluid extraction methodologies. The work developed was innovative as for the first time the potential of apple and cherry Portuguese varieties to be use as natural ingredients for the development of novel foods was demonstrated. Part of the work was published in a book (ISBN:978-972-9937-2-1). In 2010/04, I secured a research contract from iBET to grow a team on Natural Compounds Bioactivity. Our research combined green extraction processes with cell-based assays aiming to develop functional ingredients derived from industry by-products/residues. This work attracted private funding from industry (Sumol+Compal SA, Grupo Amorim, Aveleda) to foster the valorization of key industry wastes in the food and cosmetic fields. The impact and innovative nature of our research was attested by 3 competitive awards received: Nutrition Awards-2011, -2012 and Aveleda Award-2013. My strong interest in cell-based models led me to undertake a 1yr post-doc internship at ACTU of iBET (2014), where I gained knowledge on human cancer stem cells biology and bioprocessing. The project was developed in close collaboration with Merck Serono and provided me strong management skills and scientific competences to develop new advanced models of colorectal cancer for the evaluation of food bioactives and excel this thematic line in my research career path. In 2015, I became a PI of research projects of iNOVA4Health program where, in collaboration with clinical partners (IPOLFG, NMS), we aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the anticancer effect of natural bioactive compounds and potentiate the clinical translation of our research. I carried out a visiting stay at Foodomics Lab at CIAL (Spain) in 2015/05, to acquired expertise in foodomics tools to support the identification of the food constituents and nutrients at the molecular level and perform synergistic studies. In 2018/04, I established my group in the Food Functionality and Bioactives Lab at iBET. Our activities focused on the implementation of robust bioassays platforms and human intervention studies for the evaluation of the health benefits of novel foods/ingredients, under the scope of research contracts with industry (Sovena, Vitacress,Buggypower), in collaboration with clinicians (NMS, IPOLFG) and nutritionist (T. Bohn, LIH Luxemburg). In 2019/02, I started my position as Auxiliary Investigator of iBET with a competitive EEC contract awarded by FCT. In 2021/04 I became the Head of the Natural Bioactives and Nutraceuticals (NB&N) Area at iBET, coordinating the activities of 3 Labs: NB&N-chemical characterization, NB&N-process technologies, NB&N-functionality. Since 2022, I have been an invited Scientist at UFSM in Brazil. To support my research I secured, as PI/co-PI, funding from FCT, PRIMA, EEA Grants, and internal funds (726K€). The integrative nature of my expertise has been essential in other iBET research projects funded by FCT, EU and industry (850K€) and since 2021/08 we have been participating in the agenda VIIAFOOD, funded by PRR (1.8M€). I lead a team of 2 Scientists, 2 Post-Docs, 8 PhD and 2 MSc students, 4 junior research fellows and 1 Senior Technician. I completed the supervision of 13 MSc students and 4 Post-Docs and I am lecturer in PhD and MSc Programs (ITQB-NOVA, FFUL). I published 71 manuscripts (total citations:2372; h-index:30), 7 book chapters and presented over 100 posters and 40 oral communications (16 invited), demonstrating the scientific competences, originality and international recognition of my research
