Kiron Viswanath (KV) Is Full Professor (and Pro Dean) at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture in Nord University, Bodø, Norway. Works in the area of Agrarian Sciences with emphasis on Aquaculture Sciences. His career as an aquaculture scientist spans over 3 decades and previously he worked at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan. He has nearly 30 years of involvement in aquaculture education in Japan and Norway. He was involved in the development of the MS and PhD programmes in Aquaculture at Nord University and served as the PhD programme coordinator for 6 years. KV has supervised over 60 students (PhD and MS) in the fields of fish nutrition, immunology and microbiology. His research focuses on preventive nutrition and health of fish, in order to devise better nutritional strategies aimed at improved health management and sustainability in aquaculture. Current research interests are on the intestinal immune system and microbiota, to understand the contribution of the microorganisms to health and nutrition of fish. A separate line of research developed during the last 10 years is on microalgae, primarily for food and feed applications. He also conducts research of the bioactive potential of algal derivatives. In close collaboration with Wageningen University, the Netherlands, his team also performs biotechnological research on cold-adapted microalgae. KV has over 170 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters. He is a review editor in Frontiers in Immunology and a member of the Editorial Board of Reviews in Aquaculture. In 2015, KV won the Best Research Prize of Nord University.
