Isabel F. Amaral graduated in Aquatic Sciences in 1987 at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto, and dedicated the first years of her career to the field of marine aquaculture, working as a biologist in a private company. Then she moved to academia to pursue a PhD program in Biomedical Engineering with Mário Barbosa and Pedro Granja at INEB (Instituto Nacional de Engenharia Biomédica), which resulted in the thesis entitled "Chitosan Matrices for Cell-based Bone Regenerative Therapies (2006). In the same year, I Amaral joined Ana P. Pêgo’s research team as a Post-Doc fellow. During the Post-Doc studies carried out at INEB and at the lab of Prof. James Kirkpatrick (Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany), I Amaral developed a pre-vascularized scaffold for neural stem cell delivery into the injured spinal cord. In 2009, she was appointed assistant investigator in the framework of Programa Ciência 2008, and in 2013, she became a contracted researcher at INEB. Presently Isabel Amaral is a researcher at the NanoBiomaterials for Targeted Therapies (nBTT) group of i3S, and the scientific coordinator of the Biointerfaces and Nanotechnology i3S core facility. Has published 29 articles in scientific journals. Has 5 sections of books, 1 book, and a provisional application for patent. Has been reviewer for the European Science Foundation, 4 national science foundations (Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal and Brasil), COST association, and 34 international scientific journals, and has organized 13 events. Has supervised 1 PhD thesis e co-supervised one, 11 MSc dissertations e co-supervised 4. Co-supervised 3 works of course completion of LSc/BSc. Has received 4 awards. Has participated in 13 scientific projects in the field of regenerative medicine, as Researcher (7 projects), Supervisor (3 projects), as well as Principal investigator (3 projects). Isabel F. Amaral works in the area of Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine with emphasis on neuroregeneration.
