After degrees in Philosophy (BA) at the University of Bristol and Cognitive Science (MSc) at the University of Birmingham, my PhD (supervised by Mark Georgeson at the University of Birmingham) addressed human visual motion processing. I was a postdoc for four years, working first with Andy Smith (at Royal Holloway, University of London) and then with Robert Hess (at McGill University). I was appointed Lecturer in Psychology here in 2001. My research is characterised by a core area of expertise (visual motion perception in humans), with increasingly frequent forays into other areas of interest, such as camouflage, reading, and categorisation of colour. The first of these, camouflage, is currently my main focus. Bristol now has the highest concentration of people in the world investigating all aspects of camouflage: over the last few years, Innes Cuthill (Biological Sciences), Roland Baddeley (Experimental Psychology) and I formed the Camouflage Group at Bristol, and we have attracted both academic (BBSRC, EPSRC) and industrial (DSTL, QinetiQ) funding. Some of my publications, both in the area of camouflage (Allen et al., 2011; Scott-Samuel et al., 2011) and elsewhere (Attwood et al., 2012) have garnered extensive international press coverage and resulted in radio and television appearances. More importantly, Bristol is now seen as the place for camouflage research, internationally.
