Catarina IV Ramos is a Researcher at the Chemistry Department, of University of Aveiro, Portugal. She obtained her PhD degree in April of 2012 at the University of Aveiro and in February of 2013 she obtained a Post-doc grant with the project "New multicharged porphyrins and phthalocyanines as potential telomerase inhibitors". Her research interests are focused on the characterization and study of fragmentation patterns of porphyrins, expanded porphyrins, chlorins and phthalocyanines using electrospray mass spectrometry and multistage electrospray mass spectrometry. Hybrids porphyrin-terpyridine and porphyrin-chalcone and heterocyclic alkaloids and related compounds has been more recently object of study. An important line of action is related with the potential of these macrocycles and other heterocycles to stablish non-covalent interactions with duplex and quadruplex DNA structures, aiming to evaluate the ability of new molecules to inhibit telomerase and consequently control cancer cell proliferation. Her research activities gave rise to the publication of 27 research articles in journals indexed on Scopus, fourteen of them as first author, and nine also as corresponding author. She has participated, with oral and poster presentations, in several national and international conferences. She has a h-index of 12. She is co-editor of two special issues of the journal Molecules entitled "Photodynamic Therapy in Cancer Treatment", guest- editor of one issue in Biomolecules entitled "From G-Quadruplex Stabilization to Anticancer Therapy" and member of the referee board of several indexed journals. She is lecturing practical classes of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry at the Chemistry Department of UA. She is regularly member of evaluation panels of final graduation projects and research fellowships. She was supervisor of two MSc students (one ongoing), mentor of one MSc student and was involved in the supervision of several undergraduate students (three ongoing) and one young researcher. She also participated in the PhD work of an international student, mentoring the gas-phase fragmentation studies of several porphyrins isolated during his studies. She was responsible by the implementation in the group of adequate biochemical and biophysical techniques to evaluate the interaction of tetrapyrrolic macrocycles and other ligands with DNA structures as it is patent by the research articles published. She has a strong relationship with the Laboratory of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, IBILI - Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, where during a research internship had the opportunity to acquire experience in biochemical techniques, highly used in her field of interest. This experience proved to be very important to expand her research expertise. A network with the Biopharmaceutical and Biomaterials research group from the Health Sciences Research Centre-University of Covilhã (CICS-UBI), an outstanding national research group in her field of interest, was also established and it is in progress. Other network has been established with Doctor Rui Vitorino from Institute of Biomedicine of Aveiro (IBIMED) a recognized expert in Proteomics that could give a significant input in the knowledge and identification of key proteins involved in cellular reorganization events upon telomerase activity inhibition. DNA G-quadruplex structures are also present in microbial genomes thus can also represent novel therapeutic targets for antimicrobial or antiviral therapy. Taking these new area of study in mind, she is member of the COST Action: CA21145 - European Network for diagnosis and treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections (EURESTOP).
