Guilherme Macedo (MD, PhD) is the Head of the Gastroenterology Department in Hospital São Joao (HSJ) and University of Porto Medical School (FMUP), Portugal, recently designated as the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) Gastroenterology and Hepatology Training Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Porto, in 1983, and also earned a PhD conducting research on cytokines and liver diseases. He completed fellowships in Portal Hypertension and Liver diseases at Hôpital Beaujon, Clichy, France, and at the Klinikum Univérsitat Freiburg, Germany. He is board certified both in Gastroenterology and in Hepatology (Portuguese Medical Association, OM 28028), and is Aggregate Professor of Gastroenterology in the FMUP, Portugal. His Clinical and Research interests include both Hepatology, namely portal hypertension, viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma and autoimmune liver diseases and also Endoscopy, area in which he has been involved in pioneer projects in Narrow Band Imaging and NOTES. He was the leading Hepatologist at the Liver Transplant Unit, for 8 years, in HSJ and also Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatology for 10 years in a kidney disease center Group; he has been the principal investigator for several clinical trials on the treatment of hepatitis C and hepatitis B and belongs to the National Health Authority Task Force on Hep C Treatment with New Drugs. He has a vast experience in multiple endoscopic procedures, devoting a significant part of his time in training youngsters and strengthening the concepts of improving technical and non-technical skills. He has published more than 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has been a member of the Organizing Committees of the major national Endoscopy, Hepatology and Gastroenterology meetings in the last 15 years. This supported his strong commitment with WGO global projects, such as The Train The Trainers Program and Training Centers development. After becoming American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Fellow in 1999, Dr. Macedo was the Governor for Portugal of the ACG from 2007-2013 and International Region Councilor in 2012-2013. He has also been serving in ACG International Committee since 2009. In these last 5 years he also became Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the European Board of Gastroenterology, being a regular member of several GI, Endoscopy and Liver societies in Europe and USA. He served for 16 years the Board of the Portuguese Society of Endoscopy as Chair of the Education and Investigation Committees, Secretary and President (2011-2013); for 6 years he also served as the Secretary of the Portuguese Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and as President in 2009-2011. He was the President of the Portuguese Pancreas Club, from 2013-2015, and is now the Vice President of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology. His personal major endeavour to strengthen the bonds with Education and Clinical Investigation institutions, incited him to run 2 Standard Train the Trainers Courses in 2007 and 2013, in Porto, Portugal, along with The Leadership and Management Advanced Course (2 editions), all with outstanding and pivotal roles of several ACG members. He brought the Portuguese Society of Endoscopy to become ACG affiliated. He has received 25 national honors and awards in the field of Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Hepatology. In October 2013 his Department was certified as an European Training Center of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and was officially launched in June 2015 as a WGO Training Center in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He stands as member of the Governing Council and Executive Committee as President Elect of the World Gastroenterology Organization In October 2015 he received the International Leadership Award in Gastroenterology from the American College of Gastroenterology.
