Afonso P. Basto (APB) graduated in 2002 in Veterinary Medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV), Technical University of Lisbon, and there obtained a Master degree (pre-Bologna) in Tropical Animal Sciences, in 2006, with studies on African swine fever virus. APB then earned an FCT grant to develop a PhD project at the FMV where he developed a cloning and expression system for the production of antigens in fusion with a bacterial lipoprotein (OprI), which activates the immune system through TLR2/1 (concluded at 2011). As a postdoctoral fellow, APB further characterized the immunomodulatory properties of the OprI lipoprotein. The OprI system developed during his PhD was then applied as a tool to generate novel experimental vaccines against neosporosis in collaborative projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (Prof. Andrew Hemphill, Vetsuisse Faculty, Bern, Switzerland). In 2015 and then in 2016-2017, APB was recruited as Assistant Researcher by the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern where he worked in experimental mouse models of diseases caused by apicomplexan parasites, both on immunization and therapeutic strategies. Back in Portugal, APB joined the LGraça Lab at iMM as a post-doc fellow where he studied the influence of adjuvants on T follicular helper cells and B cell isotype switching, while collaborating in several other studies about lymphocyte regulation, both in humans and mouse models. In March 2019, APB was contracted by FMV under a FCT project on TLR2-targeting adjuvants, maintaining close collaborations with the iMM and Vetsuisse Labs. At FMV, APB has been setting up a research line within the Tropical Animal Health and Production (TAHP) Lab where the group develop fundamental immunology research as a basis for the development of novel veterinary vaccines. APB is co-author of 22 papers (10 as first author, 1 as co-first author), coordinated 2 projects at CIISA/FMV as Principal Investigator, is Co-Principal Investigator of a national FCT project and further participated in 8 national projects (6 in Portugal - team member/grant - and 2 in Switzerland - contract) and 2 European projects (1 as grant holder and 1 as team member). APB participated in the organization of two international congresses (7th International Congress of the European Society for Veterinary Virology, 2006; Apicowplexa: International Meeting on Apicomplexan Parasites in Farm Animals, 2012); collaborated in pedagogic activities (practical lessons of Infectious Diseases and of Tropical Infectious and Parasitic Diseases at FMV, UTL/ULisboa; invited lectures in the course of Fundamental Immunology - MSc in Clinical Microbiology and Emergent Infectious Diseases and in the course of Immunology - Integrated Masters Course in Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, ULisboa); has supervised PhD, Master and undergraduate students and has collaborated in advising the laboratory work of Master and PhD students.
