I am a young and enthusiastic young researcher. I hold a Degree in Pharmacy (2011), which provides me with multidisciplinary knowledge and the tools to discover the possible interaction between chemical compounds and biological systems, and the mechanism of action in disease, (e.g., cancer). Moreover, I also obtained a Degree in Food Science and Technology (2013), focused on science applied in the use of new food technologies and their implications in therapy. After University, I decided to work as Quality Control Managed in a food manufacturer, where I was able to develop critical soft management skills, technology translation and meeting deadlines of production and regulatory entities. This experience was determinant to reinforce my will to follow my passion – applied research! Thus, I applied and won a fellowship in a competitive funding application by the European Social Found to work in a research group of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology II of University of Granada (2017 to 2018). During this time, I was involved in securing two research contracts. This track-record in Industry provided me with tremendous expertise in evaluating the therapeutics implication of natural product. After conclusion of my PhD in metallomics within the Physiology Department of University of Granada, where I became an expert in murine and cell culture models (licensed for animal work cat. B). I also had a strong collaboration on nanoparticles with University of Oviedo, focused on the study of the distribution and effect of iron nanoparticles in vivo and in vitro models – which shall be fundamental for the assessment of cell uptake and biodistribution of the nanomaterials within the present proposal. The collaboration between the Spanish groups and the host institution is one of the relevant outcomes of the present proposal. From May 2019 to March 2020, I worked at FTC-NOVA in the Nanomedicine@FCT group headed by Prof. Pedro Baptista. The group is an International reference in the use of metallic nanoparticles for anticancer strategies with recent focus on magnetic hyperthermia. Since August 2020 I work at University of Granada where I expand my knowledge about natural products and their implications in therapy participating in two research projects. I have developed extensive communication capabilities allowing easy dissemination of my work. Despite having worked in Industry, I have published 17 journal papers and 15 contributions to national and international congress. Of note are the 14 papers in 2020-21 alone! Moreover, I am extremely found of teaching (which I do in Granada, Spain, FCT-NOVA, Portugal and Federal University of Sergipe, Brazil). I am the principal investigator of a project for young researchers obtained in competitive competition, which is focused on the study of a Mediterranean jellyfish extract and its composition and bioactivity for the development of new food and cosmetic products.
