Nuno Ribeiro received a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in September 2017 at the UM and in cooperation with both the BiRD Lab and ORTHOSXXI. During his dissertation, Nuno delved deeper into his passion for developing robotic and monitoring devices for motor assessment, utilizing BiRD Lab's cutting-edge research techniques and equipment. BiRD Lab’s research experience motivated his application to a Ph.D. scholarship funded by FCT&MIT-Portugal to look forward to reaching knowledge in assistive robotics and fall prevention and prediction strategies. Throughout his academic journey, Nuno consistently sought to connect his research to practical, real-world applications and social impact, exploring opportunities for tech transfer, obtain transferable skills, filing patents, and collaborating on industry-driven projects to bring assistive technologies closer to market, ultimately improving the lives of individuals in need. Nuno began his PhD studies in March 2018 at BirdLab/CMEMS/Leaders for Technical Industries(LTI)-MIT, with support from FCT(PD/BD/141515/2018). NR successfully completed the first curricular year of his PhD(score 18/20),expanding his knowledge on devices and algorithms to prevent and predict falls. In the subsequent 3 years, he tackled the scientific and technological challenges of his PhD through a synergetic interaction between multidisciplinary engineers, caregivers and seniors from senior care institutions(with whom he established partnerships with 11 institutions for data collection),clinicians, and the business sector(ORTHOSXXI). Nuno received leadership training from Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Rouco and joined iTeams courses and seminars on leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurship during his PhD to enhance research and entrepreneurial skills. His Ph.D. research yielded the development of senior-oriented robotic assistive devices, incorporating reliable fall prediction and cross prevention capabilities to facilitate customised balance recovery for senior fallers(>65 years)during their daily activities. This Ph.D. revealed scientific (8 journal and 7 conference papers), academic (16 MSc degrees), and social impact. His ambition for technological progress resulted in 2 R&D proposals and a business idea award(SpinUM-2023 edition), which secured his place at the Dublin Entrepreneurial Ecosystem from May 22-24 this year. Further, he delineated clinical protocols that contributed to the approval of an ethical committee(CEICVS 063/2021) for a clinical research at UM. From the beginning, his keen interest was to coordinate and work with a multidisciplinary team. Currently, he is the advisor of 5 master’s dissertations and co-advisor of 3 Ph.D. research on Mechanical, Informatics, Electronics and Biomedical Engineering, respectively. He is an invited assistant professor at the UM since 2019 aiming to bring high-level techniques demanded in a near-future in Biomedical and Electronics Engineering. His recognized know-how in assistive robotics and AI led to the invitation as a reviewer of conference and journal manuscripts and a special issue editor of Sensors. He received a Doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering in December 2022 and received the 2023 Best National PhD Thesis in Robotics award from the Portuguese Society of Robotics. Since January 2023, he is a junior researcher at the UM and was actively working on the SmartOs project, coordinating academic and research tasks. He is the PI of INSPIRE(2023.13876.PEX) and a member of INTEGRATOR(2022.15668.MIT) and FAIR(2022.05844.PTDC). He also collaborated with ORTHOSXXI and WIP on a P2030 industry project, looking forward to competitive funding from national funding agencies. Nuno is a dedicated researcher with a passion for developing solutions for the elderly.
