Sylwin Pawlowski holds a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (May 2015). Since February 2011 he develops his investigation at Laboratory of Membrane Processes (LAQV-REQUIMTE and iBET / NOVA School of Science and Technology (NSST)), first as PhD student, followed by Postdoc position at iBET, Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position at The University of Edinburgh (Scotland/UK), and currently as Researcher at NSST (6-year-position obtained at Individual Scientific Employment Stimulus call - approval rate less than 8.5%). His research activities concern experimental, modelling and theoretical work in the field of membranes and electromembrane processes. His main areas of interest are recovery of lithium from saline streams, electrospinning, 3D printing, sustainable power generation by reverse electrodialysis, membrane profiling, membrane fouling, flow capacitive deionization, mass transfer phenomena and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). During his scientific and curricular path, he spent several periods of time abroad at Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona/Spain), Institut Européen des Membranes (Montpellier/France), University of Twente (Enschede/The Netherlands) and The University of British Columbia (Vancouver/Canada). He published 1 book chapter and 20 articles (10 as the first author and 7 as the corresponding author) in top peer review international journals such as Chemical Engineering Journal (IF=13.273), Water Research (IF=11.236), Applied Energy (IF=9.746), Desalination (IF=9.501), Journal of Membrane Science (IF=8.742), Science of The Total Environment (IF=7.963) and Separation and Purification Technology (IF=7.312). He received several awards such as Best student oral presentation award (2014), Prémio Santander NOVA 2022, Best poster award (2023) and 4 travel/fee/attendee awards. He also won the Applied Energy 2018 Highly Cited Review Paper Award attributed by Elsevier. He actively participates in different aspects of academic life such as international conferences (36 oral presentations and 21 posters), courses for skills development (as participant and/or organizer), lectures about membranes and CFD, and peer-reviewing in scientific journals. In 2021 he was selected to the Early Career Editorial Board of Separation and Purification Technology (IF=7.312). He completed the supervision of 1 PhD (as co-supervisor), 3 master (1 as supervisor and 2 as co-supervisor) and 2 bachelor (as co-supervisor) students. Currently he is supervising 1 PhD student and 2 researchers, and co-supervising 1 master student and 2 PhD students (one at the frame of Horizon Europe/Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions/Doctoral Networks, EXBRINER Project, and the second at Bondalti in the frame of ENGIQ Portuguese Chemical Industry program). He also collaborated with other industrial (and non-academic) partners such as Hovione (Portuguese pharmaceutical company) and Wetsus (European Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology in The Netherlands). Since 2021/2022 he teaches CFD to 4th year students at Numerical Methods Applied to Chemical and Biological Engineering. He is/was Principal Investigator (PI) of 4 projects funded by Portuguese Science Foundation: 1 Scientific Research and Technological Development IC&DT 2020 Project, Se(L)ec(i)vity (less than 6% of submitted projects received the funding), and 3 Advanced Computing Projects (214 981 CPU core.hours awarded in total). Furthermore, he is Co-Pi of 1 exploratory project funded by Portuguese Science Foundation. He is also local PI at his host institution of H2020-SC5-2018-2019-2020 European Project SEArcularMINE. The funding awarded for host institutions through these projects totalized 898 692.20 euros. Beside those, he is/was a team member of 9 other research projects.
