Reto Gassmann is a group leader at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S) in Porto interested in the function and regulation of the major microtubule minus end-directed motor in animal cells, cytoplasmic dynein 1 (dynein). Reto studied biochemistry and molecular biology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and joined the group of Prof. Bill Earnshaw at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology in Edinburgh, UK, for graduate research on mitotic chromosome segregation. In 2005, he moved to the USA for postdoctoral work in the group of Prof. Arshad Desai at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in La Jolla, CA, where he continued to work on cell division and started research on dynein in the animal model Caenorhabditis elegans. In 2012, he joined the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology in Porto (now part of i3S) as a Principal Investigator and became a group leader in 2014. His group uses live-cell fluorescence microscopy, genetics, and biochemical approaches in C. elegans and human cultured cells to study dynein function and regulation during chromosome segregation and intracellular transport. Current projects focus on adaptor proteins, which bring dynein together with its processivity factor dynactin and establish a link between the motor and its diverse cargo. The goal is to uncover general and cargo-specific mechanisms underlying assembly and activation of the dynein-dynactin transport machine in different cellular and developmental contexts.
