Judite Novais Barbosa is an Assistant Professor at the Anatomy Department of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto (ICBAS) and Researcher at the Research Group "Bioengineered #D Microenvironments" of the Institute of Research and Innovation in Health of the University of Porto (i3S). Judite has graduated in Microbiology at the Faculty of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University in 1997 and received her PhD in Engineering Sciences at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2005. In 2016 has received the Aggregation title in Biomedical Sciences from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Judite´s research work is focused on the biological response observed after the implantation of a biomaterial, specifically on the inflammatory response. She is also interested in the modulation of this response with a specific focus on the role of macrophages. She developed as PI a Project funded by FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology) whose main goal was to modulate the in vivo inflammatory response caused by the implantation of a biomaterial. This project led to the publication of several manuscripts in the recognized international journal Biomaterials, and obtained an excellent final evaluation. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Currently, her research work is focused in the modulation of the inflammatory response through the development of immunomodulatory biomaterials with the aim of creating a pro-regenerative microenvironment. Major achievements include: (i) modulation of the inflammatory response to biomaterials using pro-resolution mediators (ii) development of scaffolds with immunomodulatory properties that were able to induce in vivo a shift in the macrophage profile and thus create pro-regenerative miroenvironments. Judite has developed a passion for uncovering the role of macrophages in the modulation of the inflammatory response: In particular, she has investigated the activation of inflammasomes, which are protein complexes that are key players in innate immune responses, in macrophages that are in contact with biomaterials. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Judite has integrated the teams of several externally funded projects, currently participating in one. She is also involved in the supervision of postgraduate students, currently has 1 PhD and 1 Master student; and in several initiatives of science dissemination and in the organization of scientific meetings such as International Advanced Summer Courses. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Judite is Professor of Systematic Anatomy of the Integrated Master in Medicine and in Dental Medicine and professor of Human Anatomy, Monography, Integrated Project and Dissertation of theDegree and Master in Bioengineering. She is Adjunct-Director of the Degree in Bioengineering and of the Master in Bioengineering of the University of Porto and also member of the respectives Scientific Committees. She is also a member of the Scientific Committe of ICBAS. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
