Alexandra Brito (AB) holds a BSc in Chemistry (UMinho), with her thesis developed at the University of Pardubice (CZ) under Erasmus Program. AB holds a MSc degree in Medicinal Chemistry (School of Sciences, UMinho) and Post-Graduation in Health Sciences (School of Medicine, UMinho). Her education was pursued with simultaneous research activities under FCT projects(PTDC/CTM-NAN/119184/2010;PTDC/QEQ-MED/1671/2012). In 2013, she develop research activities in the area of molecular biology at Leiden University Medical Center (NL), under the Leonardo da Vinci program. In 2015, she was awarded a PhD fellowship by FCT to work on supramolecular glycomaterials at 3Bs Research Group, UMinho. Under her PhD, she collaborated with Prof Rein Ulijn from the Advanced Science Research Center at CUNY and Dr Jason Lewis, MD at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center – where she spent one year, supported by the FLAD. In 2020, she obtained PhD on Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells and was awarded with the Julia Polak Doctorate Award by the European Society of Biomaterials and was selected as the best PhD Thesis of 2020 by 3Bs. In 2020, she was awarded a grant from the Portuguese Cancer League to develop a glycan-targeting anticancer therapy. During the last five years she has been involved in several projects of different dimensions: national (PTDC/NAN-MAT/28468/2017,PTDC/CTM-REF/0022/2020,PTDC/BTM-MAT/28327/2017,PTDC/BII-BIO/31570/2017) and European Commssion(DOI:10.3030/101099063; DOI:10.3030/101099596; DOI:10.3030/668983). In 2023, she received an FCT Scientific Employment Stimulus Grant and is currently a Junior Researcher at ICVS/3B’s LA, focusing on supramolecular chemistry and glycan signaling in disease contexts. So far, AB authored 11 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, including Journal of American Chemical Society and Chem. She also contributed to 2 book chapter, and delivered 20 oral communications (three as an invited speaker).
