Carmen Santos is presently a contracted researcher at ITQB-NOVA (CEECIND/00198/2017, Research Contract by Stimulus of Scientific Employment) on legume breeding for pathogen resistance: genetic and molecular approaches to unlock the potential of Lathyrus species as source of resistance. She graduated in 2008 in Cellular Biology and Biotechnology at Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon. She obtained her MSc degree in 2010, on Isolation of genes for resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi and definition of a genetic transformation protocol in Castanea sativa, at Faculty of Sciences University of Lisbon. From 2011 to 2013, she was a research fellow in the FCT project "Understanding resistance to pathogenic fungi in Castanea sp", at Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária (INIAV). In 2017, she concluded a PhD in Biology (Molecular Genetics) at NOVA University of Lisbon-ITQB NOVA, studying genomic approaches to understand the response to Phytophthora cinnamomi infection in Castanea spp., at Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária-INIAV, as the main host institution. Research under her PhD was also developed at Plant Cell Biotechnology Lab ITQB NOVA, Clemson University Genomics Institute (USA), American Chestnut Foundation (USA) and USDA Forest Service, Southern Institute of Forest Genetics (USA). From 2017 to 2019, she was Postdoctoral researcher on legumes and maize quantitative resistance to biotic stress at the Genetics and Genomics of Plant Complex Traits Lab-PlantX, ITQB-NOVA. During that time, she was postdoctoral fellow in two European projects: LEGATO- LEGumes for Agriculture of TOmorrow (H2020-613551) DIVERSIFOOD- Embedding crop diversity and networking for local high-quality food systems (H2020-633571). She is currently Principal Investigator of a FCT national projected: Lat-E(asy) pisi- Durable resistance against the causal agent of powdery mildew (Erysiphe pisi) in grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.): Exploring transcriptomic variation to develop molecular breeding tools for legumes (2022.08266.PTDC).. She is also member of two international projects: PRIMA-DIVICIA-Use and management of Vicia species for sustainability and resilience in biodiversity-based farming systems and DIVINFOOD-Co-constructing interactive short and mid-tier food chains to value agrobiodiversity in healthy plant-based food. Her main topic of research is Quantitative Genetics applied to Plant Breeding, namely on the identification of genes controlling the responses to fungal diseases in legumes (grass pea and common bean). The application of molecular biology tools to plant breeding is a goal of her research. She has been supervising 1 PhD Student (as co-supervisor), 1 MSc student (as main supervisor) and mentored 11 students (MSc, BSc, high school and ERASMUS students) in diverse research activities. She has taught 5 classes in MSc or PhD programs, namely in the Biotechnology for Sustainability Master and Plants for Life international PhD program, respectively. She published 20 peer-reviewed papers , 10 of them as first author, 2 Conference papers, 2 magazine articles and 1 article in an international newsletter. She contributed with 28 oral presentations and 34 poster presentations in national and international congresses. She has received 6 awards, honors and/or distinctions. She participated in a total of 9 projects (5 national and 4 international). In their professional activities interacted with more than 100 collaborators, by being co-author of scientific papers and/or congress communications.
