Dr Camilo Ayra-Pardo (FRES, PhD, PM, BSc) is a proud Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London (ID: 3378), Scientific Leader of a project of the Portuguese Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT; https://sciproj.ptcris.pt/164231PRJ) at CIIMAR - Matosinhos (2021-2024), and Co-Principal Investigator of CIIMAR's Animal Parasitology and Pathology Group (https://www.ciimar.up.pt/pt-pt/teams/animal-pathology) since 2023. From 2017 to 2020, Camilo worked as an expert in invertebrate pathology for the Henan Science & Technology Department (contract no. HNGD2021049) at the China-UK Joint Laboratory of Insect Biology (Nanyang, China). Previously, he worked for 20 years at a public biotechnology company in Havana, Cuba, the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB; https://www.cigb.edu.cu/en/home/), where he transitioned from an early-career researcher to heading his own research team, dedicating the final 12 years to leading projects focused on crop pest and disease control. At CIGB, Camilo led the multidisciplinary team responsible for Cuba's first commercially grown GM crop—a Bt maize resistant to Spodoptera frugiperda. This achievement was recognised internationally (see https://www.nature.com/articles/nbt0209-110a). From 1996 to 2016, Camilo submitted more than 100 technical reports to the CIGB Scientific Council (classified as company know-how), filed four patents (two international), and registered five GM maize varieties (including one synthetic variety, one inbred line, and three single hybrids) in Cuba's Plant Variety Protection (PVP) system. He also established close links with academia by building networks with research groups in Latin America, Europe, North Africa (Egypt), and Asia working on plant molecular biology and crop protection. This enabled him to conduct research as a visiting scientist at CINVESTAV-Mexico (on microbial pesticides), Cambridge University (on insecticidal toxins), Imperial College London (on the evolution of insecticide resistance), and the University of Lausanne (on molecular plant-herbivorous insect interactions). Camilo pioneered the field of RNA interference (RNAi) in Lepidopteran insects for novel RNAi-based biopesticides. He also studied behavioural ecology in insects to investigate the relationship between host choice and Bt resistance. Camilo has published over 50 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 30 SCI journals with good reputations, and one book chapter (Springer Nature). He has guided 2 PhD students (Cuba), 7 Master's students (Cuba, China, Portugal), and 19 Bachelor's students (Cuba, China, Portugal) to successful completion. In addition, Camilo has given seminars and lectures at Latin American (Cuba, Mexico), European (UK, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal), North African (Egypt), and Chinese universities. He has participated in more than 30 international conferences. He was a member of the scientific committee for four of these conferences and two EU-Cuba training courses on detecting GMOs in food and feed. Camilo has received the Cuban Academy of Sciences annual award eight times. He is a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM; ID: 200313094), the International Organisation for Biological and Integrated Control - West Palaearctic Regional Section (IOBC/WPRS; ID: 3276), and the Society for Invertebrate Pathology. Recently, Camilo was appointed guest editor of special issues in the journals Insects (MDPI) and Egyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control (Springer Nature). Camilo is fluent in Spanish (mother tongue) and English (CEFR level C1) and has basic knowledge of Portuguese and Russian.
