For over a decade, I have dedicated my career to sleep and circadian research, working with diverse populations from airline pilots, submariners, and elite athletes to school children, sleep medicine patients, and the general population. My expertise lies in designing and implementing ecological protocols in sleep and circadian medicine, an approach pursued by only a few worldwide. I established one of the largest clinical databases of Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD) patients, integrating clinical, actigraphy, polysomnography, and melatonin data, which has resulted in multiple high-impact publications. I also pioneered the first molecular biomarker study on circadian disruption in military personnel, a globally unique dataset. My work includes validating actigraphy algorithms, sleep questionnaires, and novel sleep assessment methods, further enhancing precision in sleep research. As an acknowledged expert in DSWPD, I was invited by the European Sleep Research Society to author the Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder chapter in the official Sleep Medicine Textbook. I also spearheaded the largest European sleep questionnaire dataset (~280K participants), providing unparalleled insights into sleep patterns at a population level. Beyond research, I am committed to education and capacity building. I participated in the establishment of the world’s first Master’s in Sleep and Circadian Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Lisbon, and have coordinated multiple short courses and postgraduate programs in sleep psychology, actigraphy, and circadian medicine. My mentorship spans MSc, PhD, and undergraduate students, fostering the next generation of sleep researchers. Internationally, I am a board member of the European Sleep Research Society (educational and communication). I have played a key role in collaborative research networks, including COVID-19 sleep studies and projects influencing sleep health policies. As a reviewer for top journals (SLEEP, PLOS Medicine, JSR, Translational Psychiatry), a grant evaluator, and a parliamentary consultant on-time policy, I actively contribute to shaping the future of sleep science. Besides being an early career researcher I already secured competitive funding (Ministry of Defence, BIAL), my work blends scientific excellence, innovation, and societal impact, placing Portugal at the forefront of sleep and circadian medicine.
