I graduated in Biochemistry at University of Porto (UP) - Faculty of Sciences in 2000 and completed my PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences at UP- Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, in 2010. Since my graduation, I have been working in the understanding of fundamental biochemical pathways underlying pathologies, such as cancer (SUGEN Inc., USA), neurodegenerative diseases (Neurobiology group, IBMC), organelle biogenesis disorders (Organelle biogenesis, IBMC), bone regeneration (nanoBiomaterials for targeted therapies, INEB/i3S) and Kidney Diseases (Nephrology and Infectious Diseases R&D (NID), i3S). During my PhD, I was the first to develop a robust peroxisomal in vitro import system for the study of cargo-protein translocation across the membrane, and the first to map the PEX5-mediated protein import into the peroxisomal matrix. After finishing my PhD, coming from a basic science background, I wanted to do applied science in regenerative medicine and started my PostDoctoral research in April 2011, at INEB, working in the development of new strategies for bone regeneration. Here, I was the main responsible for the establishment of an innovative receptor-based strategy for local bone repair. Within this line of work, I was awarded with an INEB Internal Project grant and the attained results have provided the necessary evidence for the formulation of a larger project that was funded by FCT in December 2012 (PTDC/BIM-MED/1047/2012). Although not being the project´s PI, I had a relevant contribution to the project´s concept, experimental planning and writing of the proposal. Aiming to do clinical research, in November 2018, I started working as a researcher at the NID group, at i3S, where I was focused in the investigation of the precise environment-specific cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying chronic kidney disease as a new mean to discover new biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets for kidney diseases. Under this topic, I was a relevant contributor for the achievement of two research grants from the Portuguese Society of Nephrology (SPN 2019 and SPN 2020) and for the project design, writing and submission of the FCT granted project 2022.04524.PTDC. At NID, I worked in the interface between basic and clinical research and performed duties as project and laboratory manager. In 2024, I was enrolled as team member in the clinical trial “EASY KIDNEY”, hosted by the Oxford University in collaboration with the Nephrology Department of Unidade de Saúde Local de São João (USLSJ), Porto, Portugal. During my career, I was the PI of one project and a team member in 11 other financed projects (#4 as major contributor and performing duties as project manager) – contributing to securing ~~€340k in funding across five research grants and an FCT PhD fellowship. I have mentored a postdoctoral researcher, 10 MSc students (one ongoing), three undergraduates, and I am currently supervising three PhD candidates, having been recognized with two Best Abstract awards in basic and clinical nephrology at SPN 2023. I have 47 publications, including a book chapter and 9 MSc theses. Currently, three senior-authorship articles are under review. As a member of the European Renal Association, the Translational Research Group of the Portuguese Society of Nephrology, BenBedPhar COST Action, and the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes, I am actively involved in the scientific community. I have contributed to the organisation of 12 scientific meetings, served as a reviewer of scientific articles and was guest editor of the journal Nutrients. In 2022, I was elected representative of i3S doctoral researchers (2022-2024), a position I assumed with the commitment to promote collaborative research and contribute to shaping future scientific directions within i3S. In 2017, I was awarded the 1st ‘Born From Knowledge’ IDEAS2017 prize, exemplifying my commitment to translational research.
